Abundance of Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in Olive Orchards in Northern Part of Iran  [PDF]

Abstract: The current study investigated spiders fauna and abundance of olive orchards in Guilan, Ghazvin, Golestan, Mazandaran and Zanjan provinces during 2002-2003. Valid spider keys identification used for species determination. Four speices Frontinellina fruntetorum (C.L. Koch, 1981) (Linyphidae), Thyene imperialis (Rossi,1846), Salticus scenicus (Clerk, 1757) (Salticidae) and Thomisus onustus, Walkenaer, 1806 (Thomisidae) of spider of the collection determined as dominant species. Uniform distribution and dominant spider species only recorded for F. fruntetorum in all provinces. Spiders abundance researchs at three olive orchards in Guilan, Ghazvin and Zanjan provinces. Population abundance of spider recorded by stroking to 8 olive branches of 30 trees at 15 days interval wicth onset from May to October. Among collected natural enemies fauna insects and spiders fauna 42.8% was belong to spider specimens and their population flactuation was varied from 25.4 to 60.7% in month of May to October, respectively.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to review the role of pomegranate as a potential anti-plaque agent. The main functional value of pomegranate in oral health is in its polyphenolic flavonoid content. The available literature suggests the use of pomegranate extract in the prevention of dental caries and gingival inflammation, though in-vivo evidence is scares. In India, pomegranate phytotherapy has the potential to provide cost-effective and an indigenous solution in preventive dentistry.

Abstract: The current study investigates spider fauna of olive orchards in Guilan, Ghazvin, Mazandaran, Zanjan and Golestan provinces during 2002-2003. Spiders were collected from branches, leaves, trunks, on the ground and under the stones and grasses by Steiner and Baggiolini method, bottle, aspirator, pitfall trap, pans and insect net and transfered to laboratory and classified in 45 species and 46 genera belonged to 18 families. Twenty five species, 9 genera and 2 families are reported for the first time of olive orchards.

Chemical composition, in vitro digestibility and palatability of nine plant species for dromedary camels in the province of Semnan, Iran

Abstract: This work studied the chemical composition of plants, and their digestibility and palatability to camels, selecting plants most eaten by camels from the Iranian desert of the province of Semnan. The results indicated that the order of usefulness, from the most useful, was: Salsola arbuscula, Seidlitzia rosmarinus, Suaeda fruticosa, Alhagi camelorum, Haloxylon ammodendron, Halostachys spp., Tamarix tetragyna, Tamarix stricta and Hammada salicornica. No correlation was detected between the organic matter digestibility in dry matter and chemical composition, and there was no consistent relationship between either of these variables and palatability.
Antioxidant Activity of Pomegranate Juice and Punicalagin  [PDF]

Abstract: Plant polyphenols are reported to have bioactive properties, which may be used for protection against diseases. Therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate the antioxidant activities of a pomegranate tannin polyphenol compound, punicalagin and pomegranate juice. The presence of punicalagin in pomegranate husk (US) and pomegranate juice (US & UK) was compared with a punicalagin standard using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) which are highly sensitive and selective analytical methods for the separation and identification of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins. Antioxidant mechanisms involving DPPH radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, ferrous chelating and reducing ability were also studied on pomegranate juice and standard punicalagin. The present study shows a high degree of similarity of HPLC and LC-MS results between the punicalagin commercial standard (Sigma Aldrich) and US pomegranate husk extracted with methanol. In contrast, in the methanol juice extract obtained from US and UK, higher hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity was achieved by 0.1 mg/ml from both punicalagin and pomegranate juice when compared with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) or trolox (p ≤ 0.01). Punicalagin and pomegranate juice exhibited ferrous chelating ability significantly lower than Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. These findings confirmed that punicalagin was present in pomegranate husk compared to pomegranate juice, as measured using a punicalagin standard. The antioxidant mechanism experiments concluded that, the pomegranate juice has a significantly higher radical scavenging activity in comparison with punicalagin (p ≤ 0.01). However, punicalagin showed significant ferrous chelating activity and reducing power ability in a dose-dependent manner as compared with pomegranate juice.

Abstract: Molecular spiders are synthetic bio-molecular systems which have "legs" made of short single-stranded segments of DNA. Spiders move on a surface covered with single-stranded DNA segments complementary to legs. Different mappings are established between various models of spiders and simple exclusion processes. For spiders with simple gait and varying number of legs we compute the diffusion coefficient; when the hopping is biased we also compute their velocity.

Abstract: If G is a finite graph, then the largest eigenvalue L of the adjacency matrix of G is a totally real algebraic integer (L is the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of G). We say that G is abelian if the field generated by L^2 is abelian. Given a fixed graph G and a fixed set of vertices of G, we define a spider graph to be a graph obtained by attaching to each of the chosen vertices of G some 2-valent trees of finite length. The main result is that only finitely many of the corresponding spider graphs are both abelian and not Dynkin diagrams, and that all such spiders can be effectively enumerated; this generalizes a previous result of Calegari, Morrison, and Snyder. The main theorem has applications to the classification of finite index subfactors. We also prove that the set of Salem numbers of "abelian type" is discrete.

Abstract: The current paper summarizes the antioxidative and antiatherogenic effects of pomegranate polyphenols on serum lipoproteins and on arterial macrophages (two major components of the atherosclerotic lesion), using both in vitro and in vivo humans and mice models. Pomegranate juice and its by-products substantially reduced macrophage cholesterol and oxidized lipids accumulation, and foam cell formation (the hallmark of early atherogenesis), leading to attenuation of atherosclerosis development, and its consequent cardiovascular events.
