Evaluation of the performance of two strains of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) in mixed raising systems

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance of two strains of nile tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) in mixed raising systems. a total of 3600 fish-larvae species was used, 1800 belonging to bouaké lineage, and 1800 to chitralada. the experiment was carried out in three phases; phase i in an incubator in 18 boxes, in which two treatments (bouaké and chitralada) were tested by using nine repetitions; phases ii and iii were performed in 18 cement tanks with the same treatments. in phase i, regarding the final weight and gain of weight, chitralada strain showed the highest final weight values. in phase ii, chitralada showed the highest final weight value when compared with bouaké, and, considering the gain of weight, bouaké obtained the best result. in phase iii, chitralada showed better final weight results (104 days of raising), final weight, final length and gain of length/cm (152 days of raising); but, after 279 days of the cultivation, bouaké showed a higher weight and length gain. these findings showed that chitralada strain presented the best performance.

Abstract: This study was conduced at the FMVZ – Unesp - Botucatu, to determine the Chemical composition and apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), raw energy (RE), amino acids (AA) and phosphorus availability. The fish were fed with a purified feed (base diet) and a 60% base diet plus 40% of fodder radish meal feed. Radish meal presented 91.28% DM, 42,07% CP, 4256 kcal/kg RE, 3.47% Ether extract, 7.37% crude fiber, 1.25% calcium and 1.0% phosphorus. The ADC values were DM: 55.92%, CP: 82.10%, RE: 75.26% and phosphorus: 85.23%. The ADC value for AA was 81.12% for glycine and 95.11% for glutamic acid. The results presented a potential utility for radish meal as an alternative protein source in Nile tilapia feeds. Este estudo foi realizado na Unesp - FMVZ -Botucatu, para determinar a composi o química e os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente (CDA) da matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), energia bruta (EB), aminoácidos (AA) e a disponibilidade do fósforo do farelo de nabo forrageiro, pela tilápia do Nilo. Empregou-se uma ra o purificada (referência) e uma ra o composta de 60% da ra o referência e 40% do farelo de nabo forrageiro. O farelo de nabo forrageiro apresentou 91,28% de MS; 42,07% de PB, 4256 kcal/kg de EB, 3,47% de extrato etéreo, 7,37% de fibra bruta, 1,25% de cálcio e 1,0% de fósforo. Os CDA foram de 55,92% para MS, 82,10% para PB, 75,26% para EB e 85,23% do fósforo. Os CDA dos AA estiveram entre 81,12% para a glicina e 95,11% para o ácido glutamico. Os resultados demonstram que o farelo de nabo forrageiro apresenta potencial para ser usado como fonte proteica alternativa para compor a ra o da tilápia do Nilo.

Abstract: One of the most consumed freshwater fish in South America is Nile tilapia. The present study examined the effects of flaxseed oil (FO), source of alfa-linolenic acid (LNA), on the total lipid composition and polyunsaturated fatty acid, n-6 and n-3 PUFA, contents on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) liver. Tilapias were given diets with increasing levels 0.00, 1.2, 2.50, 3.75 and 5.00% (w w-1) of FO as a replacement of sunflower oil for five months. Fatty acids analysis ofmethyl esters revealed 45 fatty acids common to all treatments. The increase of flaxseed oil resulted in a decrease in total n-6 PUFA (35.1 to 21.1%) and an increase in n-3 PUFA (3.3 to 18.5%). Thediet with LNA underwent sequential desaturation and elongation in liver, leading to an increase in all n-3 PUFA and a decrease in n-6/n-3 ratios (10.7 to 1.1). The manipulation of fatty acids with FOmay be used to increase n-3 PUFA and to help balance n-6/n-3 PUFA in dietary supplements, thus, the liver tilapia becomes one product with major nutritional value. A tilápia-do-Nilo é um dos peixes de água doce mais consumido na América do Sul. No presente experimento foram avaliados os efeitos do óleo de linha a, fonte do ácido alfa-linolênico (LNA) sobre a composi o de lipídios totais e dos ácidos graxos poli-insaturados (AGPI) das séries n-6 e n-3, contidos no fígado de tilápia-do-Nilo(Oreochromis niloticus). As tilápias receberam dietas com níveis de óleo de linha a de 0,00; 1,25; 2,50; 3,75 e 5,00% (massa massa-1), em substitui o ao óleo de girassol, por cinco meses. Nas análises dos ésteres metílicos de ácidos graxos foram detectados 45 ácidos graxos comuns em todos os tratamentos. O aumento na ingest o de óleo de linha a resultou na diminui o do total de AGPI n-6 de 35,1 para 21,1% e um aumento de AGPI n-3 de 3,3 para 18,5% no fígado. OLNA, no fígado da tilápia, sofreu sequencial dessatura o e elonga o, levando a um aumento de todos os AGPI n-3 e diminui o da raz o n-6/n-3 de 10,7 para 1,1. A manipula o de ácidos graxos com óleo de linha a pode ser utilizada para aumentar a concentra o de ácidos graxos AGPI n-3 e balancear a raz o n-6/n-3 no fígado da tilápia, tornando-se um subproduto da pesca com maior potencial nutritivo.

Abstract: Nutritional composition and apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, gross energy, essential amino acids and no essential amino acids of spray dried whole yeast, autolyzed yeast and yeast cell wall were evaluated to Nile tilapia. Eighty juveniles (83.0±8.5g) were placed in eight 250L aquaria for feeding and four aquaria of the same volume for collecting faecal samples. Both sets were equipped with flow-trough recirculating system provided with mechanical and biological filter. The results were analyzed through comparative relative index and the 100% value corresponded to the whole yeast nutrients. It can be concluded that the whole yeast contains high protein level and good apparent digestibility to nutrients and amino acids; autolysis process improves the dry matter, crude protein, gross energy and the most of essential and no essential amino acids apparent digestibility. Moreover yeast cell wall must not be used as protein source but is suggested as functional foodstuff in Nile tilapia diets.KEY WORDS: Amino acids, Oreochromis niloticus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae A composi o nutricional e os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente para matéria seca, proteína bruta, extrato etéreo, energia bruta, aminoácidos essenciais e aminoácidos n o essenciais da levedura de álcool íntegra, levedura autolisada e parede celular spray dried foram avaliados para tilápia-do-nilo. Utilizou-se um total de oitenta peixes (83,0±8,5g), alojados em oito aquários de 250 L para alimenta o e quatro de mesmo volume para a coleta de fezes, todos eles dotados de sistema de recircula o contínua de água, com filtro físico-biológico e temperatura controlada. Procedeu-se à avalia o dos resultados por meio do índice relativo de compara o, atribuindo-se o índice 100% ao nutriente da levedura íntegra. Concluiu-se que a levedura íntegra apresenta alto teor protéico e boa digestibilidade para os nutrientes e aminoácidos. Além disso, concluiu-se também que o processo de autólise confere melhora na digestibilidade para matéria seca, proteína, energia e a maior parte dos aminoácidos essenciais e n o-essenciais, e que a parede celular n o deve ser utilizada como fonte protéica, sugerindo seu uso como alimento funcional. Abstract: dietary vitamin supplementation decrease stress caused by high stocking density, and boosts immunological system of farmed fish. a studied was carried out to determine vitamin a requirements of nile tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) in an all male group (13.8 ± 1.2 g) and a mixed sex population (9.8 ± 2.3 g). fish stocked in 100-l plastic aquaria (26.0 ± 1.0oc) were fed to near satiety, twice a day, seven days a week, during 75 days with vitamin a-free, semi-purified diets supplemented with 0; 600; 1,200; 1,800; 2,400; 3,000; 3,600; 4,200; 4,800 and 5,400 international units (iu) of retinyl palmitate (30% vitamin a) per kg of diet in a completely randomized experimental design, factorial arrangement 2c10 (n = 4). deficiency signs of vitamin a were observed in fish fed 0 to 1.200 iu vitamin a kg-1 diet; moderate signs were observed in fish fed diets with 1.800 to 3.600 iu vitamin a kg-1 diet; no interactions group*level (p < 0.05) were detected. dietary levels of vitamin a up to 5.400 iu kg-1 influenced final weight and weight gain of fish (p < 0.05), but did not influence feed consumption (p > 0.05). a group effect was observed regarding all performance variables (p < 0.0001). quantification of hepatic retinol (hplc) detected vitamin a only in fish fed 5.400 iu retinol kg-1 of diet, therefore characterizing that dietary retinol was used and stored. the quantity of 5.400 iu of retinol kg-1 of diet is recommended for adequate nutrition of nile tilapia.

Abstract: Morphometrics, fillet yield and fillet composition differences were researched in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, strain thai-chitralada (Tai), Brazil (Local) Northern Paraná and their hybrid (Hbr, male Thailand x Brazilians female ). The experiment was designed entirely randomly with three treatments (strains) andthree repetitions per treatment in hapa nets in ponds. The initial weights were 0.39 ± 0.20, 0.45 ± 0.22 and 0.41 ± 0.15 g for the strains Tai, Bras and Hbr, respectively. At the end of the experiment, the weights were 650.67, 534.25 and 360.00 g for the same previous sequence, with statistically significant differencesbetween groups (P<0.05). Four morphometric proportions were established to characterise each group.For the ratio (head height)/(head length), the Tai strain was largest (P<0.05) as compared to the two other strains. The other morphometric proportions were not different (P>0.05). The strain Hbr produced (P<0.05) greater fillet yield (39.05%) when compared to Local (38.00 %) and Tai (36.51 %), the latter two were not different from each other (P>0.05). Considering fillet composition, Local strain had the least crude lipid content of (1.88 %), as compared to Hbr (2.44 %) and Tai (2.96 %) which were significantly different (P<0.05). Crude protein, ash and moisture of the fillets were not different (P> 0.05). As características morfométricas, rendimento e a composi o do filé foram pesquisadas em tilápia do Nilo Oreochromis niloticus, das linhagens tailandesa chitralada (Tai), local (Local, Norte do Paraná, Brasil), e da proveniente do cruzamento de ambas (Hbr, macho tailandesa x fêmea local). Ao início do experimento os peixes (n: 900) apresentavam peso de 0,39 ± 0,20; 0,41 ± 0,22 e 0,45 ± 0,15 g e ao final 650,67; 534,25 e 360,00 g para as variedades Tai, Local e Hbr, respectivamente. Foram estabelecidas quatro raz es morfométricas, sendo que a raz o entre a altura da cabe a/ comprimento da cabe a da variedade Tai foi maior (P 0,05). A composi o centesimal do filé da linhagem Local apresentou menor teor de lipídeos (1,88%) (P < 0,05) quando comparada à Hbr (2,44%) e Tai (2,96%), que também diferiram entre si, com menor teor de lipídeos para a Hbr (P < 0,05). O teor em proteína bruta, cinzas e umidade do filé n o apresentaram diferen as significativas (P > 0,05) entre as variedades.

Abstract: The toxicity of a commercial grade malathion on Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, fingerlings was determined. The 24, 48, 72, and 96-h LC50 of malathion on Nile tilapia fingerlings were 7.19, 5.43, 5.34, and 5.30 mg/l, respectively. Behavioral changes in fish included rapid opercular movement, hyperexcitability, darkening of the body, and contraction of trunk muscles. Moribund fish displayed labored opercular movement, severe contraction of the trunk muscles, erratic swimming, and total loss of equilibrium. A safe level of less than 0.53 mg/l malathion for Nile tilapia fingerlings was considered.
Toxicity and Efficacy of Lidocaine as an Anesthetic for Nile Tilapia; Oreochromis niloticus

Abstract: The anesthetic lidocaine was tested for its toxicity, efficacy and safety on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Toxicity values were variable and depended mainly on concentration and time of exposure. Concentrations of 60, 80 and 100 mg L-1 lidocaine were all effective for rapid anesthesia with 100% survival. In moderately rapid anesthesia, 40 mg L-1 lidocaine induced loss of equilibrium in Nile tilapia within 20 min exposure and 100% survival. Safety Index (SI) values for lidocaine on Nile tilapia indicated that the shorter the exposure time, the higher SI values. Repeated anesthesia in freshly prepared solution of lidocaine did not appear to affect on Nile tilapia sensitivity in terms of anesthetization, recovery and survival. However, results were in contrast and variable when previously prepared (old) solutions of lidocaine were used.
Nutritional aspects of nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) silage

Abstract: one third of the world's fishing produce is not directly used for human consumption. instead, it is used for making animal food or is wasted as residue. it would be ideal to use the raw material thoroughly and to recover by-products, preventing the generation of residues. with the objectives of increasing the income and the production of the industry, as well as minimizing environmental and health problems from fish residue, chemical silage from tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) processing residues was developed after homogenization and acidification of the biomass with 3% formic acid: propionic, 1:1, addition of antioxidant bht and maintenance of ph at approximately 4.0. analyses to determine the moisture, protein, lipids and ash were carried out. the amino acids were examined in an auto analyzer after acid hydrolysis, except for the tryptophan which was determined through colorimetry. the tilapia silage presented contents that were similar to or higher than the fao standards for all essential amino acids, except for the tryptophan. the highest values found were for glutamic acid, lysine and leucine. the results indicate a potential use of the silage prepared from the nile tilapia processing residue as a protein source in the manufacturing of fish food.

Abstract: this study aimed to produce and nutritionally characterize the ostrich offal meal, and to evaluate its digestible value for nile tilapia. the relevance of the study lies in the possibility of using by-products from the food industry as alternative food for animals. for this, chemical and microbiological analyses were performed, as well as digestibility trial in the meal produced with ostrich offal for nile tilapia. the levels found for protein, lipids, gross energy and minerals were 71.08%, 16.54%, 5115 kcal kg-1 and 5.62%, respectively. microbiological analysis showed absence of salmonella spp. in the product. the digestibility of protein was 90.41%, and of energy was 77.65%, while the phosphorus availability was 80.18%. therefore, the ostrich offal meal proved to be a by-product with good nutritional profile and significant digestibility to be used in diets for nile tilapia.
