This article discuss four senses of the frontier/border, extending the work of Sergio Buarque de Holanda: the “hybrid zone” conception or “territory-bridge” in the understanding of Iberian singularity; frontier/border as division marker between Portuguese and Hispanic colonization; the fronts of expansion or frontiers in movement in the process of colonization; and last, the boundary as a transition, going from the Iberian singularity to a modern and urban world.

Abstract: the main purpose of the article is to describe and to analyse sérgio buarque de holanda's trajectory in universidade de s?o paulo (usp). at usp, he could dedicate himself entirely in what he liked to do: to research. there, sérgio buarque de holanda formed a researchers' group and he changed the teaching routes in history course, which formed only elementary and high school teachers. he idealized and founded the "instituto de estudos brasileiros" (brazilian studies intitute), a multi-disciplinary institution responsible for important researches included the theme "brasil". in this institute (ieb), he formed a ample archive and a important library. in 1969, the 13-years-job at usp finished itself in a careworm process, when he asked for his retirement in sympathy with other retired professors compulsorily by ai-5.
The Other Roots: Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and the Portuguese
Monteiro, Pedro Meira
Ellipsis , 2008,
Abstract: In this article I deal with Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s Raízes do Brasil, and the way the Portuguese is portrayed in the book, first through an assumed “Iberian” identity, and second by a supposed Lusitanian specificity. The paradoxical result is that, in pointing to this unique Other, Sérgio Buarque’s rooty metaphors end up making the Other present, thus going against Brazilian Modernists’ deep desire to leave the Portuguese vanish over the horizon. Eventually, the article is an attempt at bringing some light to the debates on language and otherness.

Acta Scientiarum : Human and Social Sciences , 2008,
Abstract: Este artigo analisa as concep es de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda sobre acoloniza o do Brasil. This article analyzes the conceptions of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda about the colonization of Brazil. The historian understands the formation of the colonial society as a physical and psychological construction, possible thanks to the ‘social type’ assumed by the conquering Portuguese in the period of the great discoveries. Sérgio Buarque, contrasting Portugal and Holland, affirms that the latter country had the same motivations as Portugal when colonizing Brazil, without, however, succeeding. He understands that, more than an answerto the new economic demands, the formation of Brazil and of the Brazilians was possible as a result of the mentality that made up the character of the Portuguese. To try and understand the Portuguese settler, understanding that he had the lead role in our first socialformation, will be our objective in this study.
O alarido das vidas marginais na obra de Chico Buarque The sounds of the marginal lives in Chico Buarque’s songs  [cached]
Rodrigo Moraes
The objective of this work is to analyze how composer Chico Buarque discourses through numerous pieces of music in the daily life outcome of the so-called Brazilian lower social classes and their characters, powering and vitalizing his narratives. To do so, the work was based on the fact that, under a historically built speech, the lower-class voices have been continuously underrated, as well as listened to through the prism of lack and privation.Likewise, we believe it’s possible to notice in the artist’s work radical singularity about those characters’ everyday life, allowing the arousal of new insights into their way of life and showing promising alternatives to face the naturalizing logic uttered in hegemonic speeches.
Assis, Arthur;
Revista Brasileira de História , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-01882010000100006
Abstract: this text features an interpretation of from the empire to the republic, the book by sérgio buarque de holanda that re-enacts brazil's late 19th century political history. based on concepts developed by the historical theorist j?rn rüsen, the article delves particularly into three aspects of the aforementioned book: the theoretical artefacts structuring the interpretation of the crisis of the brazilian monarchy; the narrative patterns deployed so as to make sense of that past experience; and the orientation context that functions as source of criteria of sense/meaning for both interpretation and representation. this analysis intends to illustrate that historical theory is not only a means to abstractly explore the complex questions connected to the production of historical knowledge, but also a tool for obtaining concrete images about the intellectual practice of professional historians.
