SOME CLASSICAL HYPOTEXTS IN MARGARET DOODY’S ARISTOTLE AND POETIC JUSTICE

Abstract: The philosopher Aristotle appears in seven detective novels by the academic Margaret Doody in which he makes use of hisinvestigative powers to solve murder mysteries. In Aristotle andpoetic justice Stephanos, a friend of Aristotle, narrates how Anthia, the heiress of a silver merchant, has been abducted. While Stephanosand Aristotle pursue the abductor and the heiress on the road to Delphi, two murders complicate their challenge. Doody’s novel provides a convenient framework for opening awindow onto the Greek world of 330 BC. In the body of the article,hypertextual allusions introduced by Doody are examined andevaluated, using a modified version of Genette’s scheme ashermeneutic paradigm.
Abnormal Behaviors and Developmental Disorder of Hippocampus in Zinc Finger Protein 521 (ZFP521) Mutant Mice  [PDF]

Abstract: Zinc finger protein 521 (ZFP521) regulates a number of cellular processes in a wide range of tissues, such as osteoblast formation and adipose commitment and differentiation. In the field of neurobiology, it is reported to be an essential factor for transition of epiblast stem cells into neural progenitors in vitro. However, the role of ZFP521 in the brain in vivo still remains elusive. To elucidate the role of ZFP521 in the mouse brain, we generated mice lacking exon 4 of the ZFP521 gene. The birth ratio of our ZFP521Δ/Δ mice was consistent with Mendel's laws. Although ZFP521Δ/Δ pups had no apparent defect in the body and were indistinguishable from ZFP521+/+ and ZFP521+/Δ littermates at the time of birth, ZFP521Δ/Δ mice displayed significant weight reduction as they grew, and most of them died before 10 weeks of age. They displayed abnormal behavior, such as hyper-locomotion, lower anxiety and impaired learning, which correspond to the symptoms of schizophrenia. The border of the granular cell layer of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus of the mice was indistinct and granular neurons were reduced in number. Furthermore, Sox1-positive neural progenitor cells in the dentate gyrus and cerebellum were significantly reduced in number. Taken together, these findings indicate that ZFP521 directly or indirectly affects the formation of the neuronal cell layers of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus, and thus ZFP521Δ/Δ mice displayed schizophrenia-relevant symptoms. ZFP521Δ/Δ mice may be a useful research tool as an animal model of schizophrenia.

Abstract: We present a detailed spatial and dynamical analysis of the central $\sim$~2.2~\h~Mpc region of the galaxy cluster Abell~521 (z=0.247), based on 238 spectra obtained at the 3.6~m Telescope of ESO and at the CFHT. From the analysis of the 125 galaxies confirmed members of the cluster, we derive a mean velocity of $74019 ^{+112}_{-125}$ km/s and detect a complex velocity distribution with high velocity dispersion, $1325 ^{+145}_{-100}$ km/s), but clear departure from a single gaussian component. The general structure of the cluster follows a NW/SE direction, crossed by a perpendicular high density ``ridge'' of galaxies in the core region. The northern region of the cluster is characterized by a lower velocity dispersion as compared to the whole cluster value; it hosts the BCG and a dynamically bound complex of galaxies, and it is associated to a group detected in X-ray (Arnaud et al 2000). This region could be in pre-merger stage onto the main cluster nearly in the plane of the sky. These results, taken together with the fact that most of the clumps detected on the isodensity maps, as well as the early type galaxies and the brightest ones are aligned, suggest that this NW/SE direction is the preferred one for the formation of this cluster. The central high dense region shows a lower velocity location ($73625 ^{+344}_{-350}$ km/s) and significantly higher scale ($1780 ^{+234}_{-142}$ km/s) as compared to the whole cluster values. This is due to the presence of a low-velocity group of galaxies with a high fraction of emission line objects. This can be explained in a scenario in which a merging of subclusters has recently occurred along the direction of the ``ridge'' with a significant component along the line of sight.

Abstract: While there has been significant progress in determining the transcriptional cascade involved in terminal adipocyte differentiation, less is known about early events leading to lineage commitment and cell fate choice. It has been recently discovered that zinc finger protein 423 (Zfp423) is an early actor in adipose determination. Here, we show that a close paralog of Zfp423, Zfp521, acts as a key regulator of adipose commitment and differentiation in vitro and in vivo. Zfp521 exerts its actions by binding to early B cell factor 1 (Ebf1), a transcription factor required for the generation of adipocyte progenitors, and inhibiting the expression of Zfp423. Overexpression of Zfp521 in cells greatly inhibits adipogenic potential, whereas RNAi-mediated knock-down or genetic ablation of Zfp521 enhances differentiation. In addition, Zfp521?/? embryos exhibit increased mass of interscapular brown adipose tissue and subcutaneous white adipocytes, a cell autonomous effect. Finally, Ebf1 participates in a negative feedback loop to repress Zfp521 as differentiation proceeds. Because Zfp521 is known to promote bone development, our results suggest that it acts as a critical switch in the commitment decision between the adipogenic and osteogenic lineages.

Abell 521: Dynamical analysis of a young cluster  [PDF]

Abstract: We present the results of a dynamical analysis of the rich X-Ray luminous galaxy cluster Abell 521, and discuss the nature of the arc-like structure first noted by Maurogordato et al. (1996). Our study is based on radial velocities for 41 cluster members, measured from spectra obtained at the European Southern Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We find that Abell 521 is an intermediate-redshift cluster (CBI= 74132 (-250,+202)km/s) with a rather high apparent value of the velocity dispersion (SBI= 1386 (-139,+206) km/s). This high value, which cannot be explained by trivial projection effects, and the significant clumping in the two-dimensional projected positions of the galaxies in the cluster indicate it is still undergoing strong dynamical evolution. The two brightest knots of the giant arc candidate are shown to be at the velocity of the cluster. This makes the gravitational lensing interpretation for the bright curved structure very improbable, although gravitational lensing might still be present in this cluster, as suggested by the colors of two fainter arclet-like structures.

Abstract: Control and management of visitors at heavily patronized public offices can be problematic, especially in developing countries. Construction of Electronic Reception Queue Controller (ERQC) provides a system for ordered reception sequence, through the use of light signals, akin to that of traffic control light. The ERQC consists of sets of switching circuits and LEDs, among other components and utilizes a semi-automated process to signal visitors entry into public offices. The construction details and operation mode of the ERQC are presented in this study.
