Lopes, Adriana Carvalho;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982009000200002
Abstract: funk carioca is a popular type of music in brazil, produced and consumed mainly by the youth in the slums of rio de janeiro, known as favelas. more than entertainment and work, funk is a form of identity for the youngsters dwelling in the favelas. this paper combines linguistic analysis with ethnography in order to demonstrate that identities forged along such lines rely on a specific language in which funk performers re-signify their own social experiences and build a new cartography of the city. in such language, the slum is no longer a space of barbarism. it is instead a neighborhood where many of these young people live and enact their everyday practices.
The “carioca funk” and the new feminist morality  [PDF]
Mauro Cesar Bartolomeu,Mauri Cruz Previde
Via Litterae , 2011,
Abstract: We have analyzes two lyrics of the musical movement “carioca funk”, in order to check how the are manifested the moral values growing among women from the brasilian subs. The inquiry about lyrics of popular musical movements is justified because they are the most appropriate sources to evaluate the set of values and ideas of the proletarian classes, within which it is assumed to establish any kind of criticism of the tradicional bourgeois values. In fact, it is observed that both the lyrics analyzed betray aspects of a new sexual morality, but only one manifest a reversal of tradicional values in favor of the new woman announced by russian feminist ideologue and revolutionary leader Alexandra Kolontai (2000).

A gênese da favela carioca. A produ o anterior às ciências sociais
Valladares Licia
Valladares, Licia;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092000000300001
Abstract: the article shows the role occupied by the favela and its residents in political and social debate during the first half of the 20th century. it highlights the production of knowledge generated by journalists, physicians, engineers and social workers in the period preceding the development of social sciences and the university in brazil. it proposes that the process of construction of social representation of the favela, begun at that time, should be analyzed as a periodization beginning at a different moment than the periodization which is traditionally accepted based on the relation of the favela to the state and the type of political regime in power at different historical moments. the author suggests a periodization that has its initial moment marked by a myth of origin, euclides da cunha's vision of the settlement of canudos in his book os sert?es. in this period the favela of rio de janeiro is discovered and described by transposing the duality of coastal versus bush country (sert?es) to the urban scene, through the opposition of city to favela. following the discovery period is a second period when the favela is transformed into a social and urban problem, followed by a third period, when the idea of administrating the problem takes the form of concrete policies and measures. a fourth period includes the production of official data and the transformation of a local phenomenon into a national reality. the article shows that the centenary favela corresponds to an almost centennial social representation, an important legacy that today's social science can not disregard.
Ferreira,Vanessa Alves; Magalh?es,Rosana;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232006000200025
Abstract: the current article presents conclusions of a developed research in ensp/fiocruz, as part of a master degree course, about the relation between poverty and obesity from the symbolic structure seizure around the body. the research had as a goal examining the perception about the body of a fat women group living in a carioca slum, from the use of the qualitative methodology, using the technique of the semi-structured interview. the final researches in this work showed that among the rocinha women was in force proper standards of body that tied little esthetic attributes. the examined women noticed the obesity in a different way. it was felt through clinical symptoms as for example: "leg pains", "back pains", "lack of breath", "less disposition". it was still possible to observe that the fat body was sometimes valorous among the group, tied to work and the social condition. these results lead us to believe that the obesity assume proper outlines in the different contexts and social groups. for this reason we believe to be necessary the fulfillment of new research dates about the obesity theme in brazil.
On the Minkowski-Funk Transform  [PDF]
Susanna Dann
Mathematics , 2010,
Abstract: The subject of this paper is the history of the Minkowski-Funk Transform. After introducing the Minkowski-Funk Transform as well as its dual transform and a generalization of both, we will present an inversion formula of the Minkowski-Funk Transform. Then we will discuss the history of this problem: related work by Minkowski and Funk and the connection between their work.
From Funk to Hilbert Geometry  [PDF]
Athanase Papadopoulos,Marc Troyanov
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: We survey some basic geometric properties of the Funk metric of a convex set in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we study its geodesics, its topology, its metric balls, its convexity properties, its perpendicularity theory and its isometries. The Hilbert metric is a symmetrization of the Funk metric, and we show some properties of the Hilbert metric that follow directly from the properties we prove for the Funk metric.
On different curvatures of spheres in Funk geometry  [PDF]
Eugeny A. Olin
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: We compute the series expansions for the normal curvatures of hyperspheres, the Finsler and Rund curvatures of circles in Funk geometry as the radii tend to infinity. These three curvatures are different at infinity in Funk geometry.
