Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2005001600008
Abstract: objective: to verify whether left ventricular hypertrophy (lvh) of elite competition athletes (marathoners) represents a purely physiological, adaptative process, or it may involve pathological aspects in its anatomical and functional characteristics. methods: from november 1999 to december 2000, consecutive samples from 30 under 50-year-old marathoners in full sportive activity, with previously documented lvh and absence of cardiopathy were selected. they were submitted to clinical exams, electrocardiogram, color doppler echocardiogram and exercise treadmill test (ett). fifteen were assorted to be also submitted to ergoespirometric test and heart magnetic resonance imaging (mri). results: in ett, all of them showed good physical pulmonary capacity, with no evidences of ischemic response to exercise, symptoms or arrhythmias. in doppler echocardiogram, values of diameter and diastolic thickness of lv posterior wall, interventricular septum, lv mass and left atrium diameter, were significantly higher when compared to non-athlete control group, with similar ages and anthropometric measurements. the mean of lv mass of athletes indexed to body surface (126 g/m2) was significantly greater than the one in control group (70 g/m2) (p<0.001). magnetic resonance imaging (mri) showed there was not impairment of contractile strength or lv performance, and values of end diastolic volume, end systolic volume and ef within limits of normality. on the other hand, average ventricular parietal mass, 162.93±17.90 g, and lv parietal thickness, 13.67±2.13 mm, at the end of diastole in athlete group, differed significantly from control group: 110±14.2 g (p=0.0001) and 8±0.9 mm, respectively (p=0.0001). the same happened to the thickness at the end of systole, which was 18.87±3.40 mm (control group: 10±1.80 mm, p=0.0001). conclusion: results allowed for concluding that lvh in marathoners in full sportive activity period, assessed by non-invasive methods, represents an adaptative response t

Abstract: The aim of the present study was focused on the determination of the effect of the diameter of the hand-rim of the racing wheelchair on the heart rate and blood lactate produced at the competition speeds. The study was carried out with a world-class athlete, that made a total of 9 series of 5 minutes, at maintained speed, recovering 10 min between series and testing 3 hand-rim (34, 36 and 38cm of diameter) at 3 different speeds (20, 22 and 24 Km/h). Heart rate and blood lactate was measured. An ANOVA was made and we found statistically significant differences (p <0.0001) on Heart Rate (HR), between the different speeds and between the different diameters of hand-rim. Besides that we also found significant interaction (p <0.0001) among the factors Speed and Diameter of hand-rim. In general terms it is possible to conclude that at 20 Km/h the most efficient hand-rim (minor HR and blood lactate) was the one of 36 cm, whereas the least efficient was the one of 34 cm. Both 22 and 24 Km/h the most efficient hand-rim was that of 34 cm whereas the least efficient was that of 38 cm. We can conclude that the election of the optimal diameter of hand-rim supposes such improvement in the mechanical efficiency that in case of the studied athlete, his maximum sustainable speed with the hand-rim of 36 cm would be about 23 Km/h whereas with the hand-rim of 34 cm would be 24 Km/h. KEY WORDS: Wheelchairs. Track and field. Mechanical efficiency.

The Turkish power elite
Ali Arslan
International Journal of Human Sciences , 2006,
Abstract: This study aims to analyse, the general power structure of Turkish society, and specifically the Turkish power elite. Also, the relationships within and between the elite groups, and the distribution of power will be examined. This paper will also try to understand and explain the distribution of power in Turkish society: How far is power (effective power) diffused in society or how far it is centralised and concentrated in the hands of elite groups? In accordance with the pluralists views one could argue that, power has been diffused and fragmented among many people or elite groups which together participate in the decision-making process in contemporary Turkish society. Nevertheless, decisive and effective power (parallel with the main thesis of the elitist view) has been concentrated and centralised in the hands of the small number of elite groups which are the most powerful in the national power structure. They are predominant over other groups and these dominant groups know what others do not know and can do what others cannot do.
The global elite of power
Pe?ujli? Miroslav
Zbornik Matice Srpske za Drustvene Nauke , 2003, DOI: 10.2298/zmsdn0315093p
Abstract: In this paper, the author discusses contradictions in the contemporary process of globalization related to its current proponents (participants). The first part of the papers tries to solve the enigma of the key participants and social forces shaping the globalization, so it discusses the tree rival theories: the theory of classes, oligarchy and elite of power. The author chooses the third theory of the global elite of power. Its theoretical foundations range from classic theories of elite (Pareto Mosca, Weber) to Mill's famous elite of power. However, the trans-national elite of power is an entirely new social entity. The global elite of power is firmly established in the economic sphere, in the ownership and management of global means of production and capital, and in the use of global labor force. It is characterized by a highly articulated status culture or "class consciousness" - the cosmopolitan "Davos-culture". It represents more a network of groups than one monolithic entity, so it should be discussed synthetically. The second part analyses a collective portrait of the global elite of power in which the outstanding place is occupied by the owners and top managers of trans-national corporations and banks (whose capital highly surpasses the wealth of many countries in the world) together with them, there is the political elite (the leaders of the G-7 Group and the rulers of the trans-national organizations like MMF, World Bank, Security Council of the UN,NATO). The intellectual elite, like "The Trilateral Committee" or "Economic Forum" occupies a less conspicuous, but not insignificant place. The third part discuses the current role of the dominant (authoritarian) wing of the global elite of power, and the fourth points to the alternative possibilities and potential participants in the democratization of the global world order. The concluding, fifth part points to the historical situation in which the democratic alternative although necessary, is almost powerless. Due to the un-intended consequences of the activities of the global elite of power, future of the world society is quite uncertain.

The Ukrainian Crisis and the Transnational Elite
Takis Fotopoulos
International Journal of Inclusive Democracy , 2005,
Abstract: The events of the last few days in Ukraine are not so sudden as they seem, since the conflict was not unexpected and the ground for it was well prepared by the transnational elite,[1] in which the US elite is hegemonic because of its military power —although it has a relationship of interdependence with the ruling elites in the EU and Japan, because of their economic power. The Russian elite, despite having been asked to join the ‘Group of 7’ as an extra —mainly because of the size of its market and the remnants of the ex almighty military power it used to command— is listened to only when its interests overlap with those of the other ‘7’ (e.g. in the war against ‘terrorism’). On the other hand, the Chinese elite is not even an extra in the Group, despite seemingly rapid Chinese growth recently which, however, looks suspiciously like a bubble —similar to the past economic ‘miracles’ in Latin America— as it almost exclusively relies on foreign capital and the world market.

Francele Moreira Marisco
Scientia Iuris , 2012,
