Abstract: Mobile phone datasets allow for the analysis of human behavior on an unprecedented scale. The social network, temporal dynamics and mobile behavior of mobile phone users have often been analyzed independently from each other using mobile phone datasets. In this article, we explore the connections between various features of human behavior extracted from a large mobile phone dataset. Our observations are based on the analysis of communication data of 100000 anonymized and randomly chosen individuals in a dataset of communications in Portugal. We show that clustering and principal component analysis allow for a significant dimension reduction with limited loss of information. The most important features are related to geographical location. In particular, we observe that most people spend most of their time at only a few locations. With the help of clustering methods, we then robustly identify home and office locations and compare the results with official census data. Finally, we analyze the geographic spread of users' frequent locations and show that commuting distances can be reasonably well explained by a gravity model.

Abstract: The main objective of the undertaken research is to study the Expectations andPerceptions of Customer’s towards mobile phones. It is important to study andanalyze whether there is a gap in the expectations and perceptions of therespondents which indicates that there is scope for improvement on behalf of the mobile phone brand or there is no significant difference between the expectations and perceptions of the respondents which is indicative of the fact that the customers are satisfied with the services of their mobile phone provider. The tool used for data analysis in this research has been the Z-Test whereby it is found that there is a significant difference in the expectations and perceptions of the respondents which leads us to believe that the customers are not fully satisfied with the functionality of their handsets.

Abstract: Topic: Using a qualitative methodology, this study attempts to provide a general framework of the functions of mobile communication, and to identify the specific preferences of mobile phone users regarding the commercial messages received on their personal devices. Research objectives: (1) To identify the specific characteristics of mobile communication as perceived by mobile users; (2) to define and analyze the functions of wireless communication as perceived by mobile phone users; and (3) to investigate users preference regarding the content of commercial wireless communication. Previous research: Bauer et al. (2002) identified time, location, information and personalization as relevant acceptance factors for mobile advertising. Barwise and Strong (2002) developed a conceptual model, arguing that social norms, user's motives, mode, time, location and personal characteristics will affect the processing of mobile information by consumers. Tsang et al. (2004) evidenced the influence of entertainment, informativeness and irritation, while Bauer et al. (2005) argued that consumer attitudes are influenced by perceived information, entertainment, and social utility. In a similar study, Xu and Gutierrez (2006) tested the effect of entertainment, irritation, informativeness, credibility and personalization on the attitudes of Chinese consumers. Research methodology: First, a series of academic and practical articles and reports have been accessed in order to assess the existing knowledge on this topic. Second, five focus groups have been organized with six mobile phone users, aged between 20 and 40 years old. Each focus group comprised an equal number of male and female participants. The focus groups lasted between 45 and 60 minutes and addressed three main issues: the specific characteristics of the mobile phones as a commercial communication media, the functions of mobile phone communication, and the specific preferences of mobile phones users regarding the content of commercial messages. Findings: The participants demonstrated an active attitude regarding mobile advertising, which they think it has the potential to revolutionize the practice of commercial communication, by focusing more on consumer's personal needs and circumstances. Implications: This transformation cannot be realized without increasing the interactive control of mobile phone users over the functionality and content advertising messages. Abstract: Background. Exposure to noise from mobile devices is suspected to affect hearing. Data are limited, particularly in less developed countries. We assessed noise levels from mobile phones and user audiometric status at University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in an initial cross-sectional study. Methods. Fifty-eight staff and 45 young adult students owning mobile phones were selected. A pretested questionnaire assessed demographics, phone attributes, and predominant ear used for making and receiving calls. Noise was measured in A-weighted decibels. Pure tone audiometry was conducted at varying frequencies. Statistics computed included Chi-square and t-tests. Results. Certain phone brands used by students were commonly reported. More utilized right ears to make or receive calls. Mean reported mobile phone use duration by students was years, lower than among staff, years ( ). There were differences in use of head phones (22.2%, 12.1%) and speakers (51.1%, 15.5%) by students and staff, respectively ( ). Mean measured noise levels of phones when ringing, per user settings, were high ?dBA (students) and ?dBA (staff). Audiometry suggested 22.2% students and 28.0% staff had some evidence of hearing impairment. Conclusions. Mobile phones noise levels were high, but exposures though frequent were of short duration. Larger, longitudinal studies are needed on phone use and hearing impairment. 1. Introduction In general, less developed countries are establishing mobile (cellular) phone technology in preference to the traditional, and relatively more expensive, fixed line systems. Abstract: In the present paper, we correlated the brand of mobile phone to users’ security practices, statistically processing a large pool of the responses of 7172 students in 17 Universities of 10 Eastern and Southern Europe countries. Users show different behavior in an array of characteristics, according to the brand of the mobile phone they are using. As such, there is a categorization of areas, different for each brand, where users are clearly lacking security mind, possibly due to lack of awareness. Such a categorization can help phone manufacturers enhance their mobile phones in regards to security, preferably transparently for the user.
Harnessing Mobile Phone Social Network Topology to Infer Users Demographic Attributes  [PDF]

Abstract: We study the structure of the social graph of mobile phone users in the country of Mexico, with a focus on demographic attributes of the users (more specifically the users' age). We examine assortativity patterns in the graph, and observe a strong age homophily in the communications preferences. We propose a graph based algorithm for the prediction of the age of mobile phone users. The algorithm exploits the topology of the mobile phone network, together with a subset of known users ages (seeds), to infer the age of remaining users. We provide the details of the methodology, and show experimental results on a network GT with more than 70 million users. By carefully examining the topological relations of the seeds to the rest of the nodes in GT, we find topological metrics which have a direct influence on the performance of the algorithm. In particular we characterize subsets of users for which the accuracy of the algorithm is 62% when predicting between 4 age categories (whereas a pure random guess would yield an accuracy of 25%). We also show that we can use the probabilistic information computed by the algorithm to further increase its inference power to 72% on a significant subset of users.

Abstract: Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) technology is playing a key role in the design of the new generation of smartphones. Thanks to their reduced size, reduced power consumption, MEMS sensors can be embedded in above mobile devices for increasing their functionalities. However, MEMS cannot allow accurate autonomous location without external updates, e.g., from GPS signals, since their signals are degraded by various errors. When these sensors are fixed on the user’s foot, the stance phases of the foot can easily be determined and periodic Zero velocity UPdaTes (ZUPTs) are performed to bound the position error. When the sensor is in the hand, the situation becomes much more complex. First of all, the hand motion can be decoupled from the general motion of the user. Second, the characteristics of the inertial signals can differ depending on the carrying modes. Therefore, algorithms for characterizing the gait cycle of a pedestrian using a handheld device have been developed. A classifier able to detect motion modes typical for mobile phone users has been designed and implemented. According to the detected motion mode, adaptive step detection algorithms are applied. Success of the step detection process is found to be higher than 97% in all motion modes.

Abstract: Mobile commerce or better known as M-commerce is a fairly new phenomenon in the wake of the second technology wave from the famous E-commerce (electronic commerce) in the 21st century. As the Internet started to proliferate in many parts of the world, the mobile phone penetration in terms of voice communication started to grow rapidly. This simultaneous rapid growth has caused a new phenomenon of convergence of Internet computing and mobile communication where M-commerce has its root. M-commerce has the potential to enhance the work-life within the employed mobile phone users in Bangladesh. The purpose of this study is to examine whether awareness and knowledge, convenience of Mobile devices and WAP/GPRS enabled handsets, pricing and cost, security and privacy, rich and fast information, and perceived usefulness have any influence on the adoption of M-commerce among employed Mobile phone users in two major cities in Bangladesh – Dhaka and Chittagong. A survey method was used to collect data. The findings suggest that pricing and cost, rich and fast information, and security and privacy are significant predictors of the adoption of M-commerce. Self-efficacy is found to be a moderating factor for the adoption of M-commerce services. The findings also suggest that there is no significant gender difference in terms of M-commerce adoption level among mobile users in Bangladesh.
Weather Effects on Mobile Social Interactions: A Case Study of Mobile Phone Users in Lisbon, Portugal  [PDF]

Abstract: The effect of weather on social interactions has been explored through the analysis of a large mobile phone use dataset. Time spent on phone calls, numbers of connected social ties, and tie strength were used as proxies for social interactions; while weather conditions were characterized in terms of temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, and wind speed. Our results are based on the analysis of a full calendar year of data for 22,696 mobile phone users (53.2 million call logs) in Lisbon, Portugal. The results suggest that different weather parameters have correlations to the level and character of social interactions. We found that although weather did not show much influence upon people's average call duration, the likelihood of longer calls was found to increase during periods of colder weather. During periods of weather that were generally considered to be uncomfortable (i.e., very cold/warm, very low/high air pressure, and windy), people were found to be more likely to communicate with fewer social ties. Despite this tendency, we found that people are more likely to maintain their connections with those they have strong ties with much more than those of weak ties. This study sheds new light on the influence of weather conditions on social relationships and how mobile phone data can be used to investigate the influence of environmental factors on social dynamics.
Symptoms reported by a Casablanca population’s of mobile phone users

Abstract: This study was conducted in a Casablanca population that uses or not mobile phones (n = 700) through a questionnaire. The data collected were entered and processed using the sphinx Lexica which is a survey software and data analysis which includes the chi-square test. The results obtained show that there is a significant difference (p<0.05) between users and no-users of mobile phones for various symptoms including insomnia, nausea, dizziness, lack of appetite, auditory disturbances and visual disturbances. In the group of mobile users, there are significant differences (p<0.05) of different symptoms in relation to : sex, age, duration and frequency of use of GSM, call duration, use or not the handsfree kits and joint use of a laptop and other devices emitting electromagnetic waves.
