Abstract: Isolates of endophytic and pathogenic Pestalotiopsis from Pinus massoniana,Podocarpus macrophyllus,Podocarpus nagi,Camellia japonica,Camellia sinensis and Camellia sasanqua were collected and morphologically identified.The investigation on relationship between endophytic Pestalotiopsis and pathogenic Pestalotiopsis species based on molecular phylogenetic tree of rDNA ITS sequences was carried out.It was found that Pestalotiopsis isolates of the same species no matter it was pathogenic or endophytic were clustered in the same branch of phylogenetic tree,for example,P.lawsoniae was an endophytic fungus on twigs and a pathogen on leaves of P.massoniana;P.karstenii was an endophytic fungus on twigs and a pathogen on leaves of C.japonica;P.photiniae was an endophytic fungus on twigs of C.japonica and C.sasanqua and a pathogen on leaves of P.massoniana;and P.theae was a pathogen on leaves of C.sinensis and an endophytic fungus on twigs and leaves of C.nitidissima and twigs of P.macrophyllus.The result showes that some Pestalotiopsis species could be endophytic and pathogenic states on different species or parts of plant and an endophytic Pestalotiopsis could transformed into a pathogenic Pestalotiopsis under a certain condition.The result also supportes the previous conclusion that Pestalotiopsis species are not generally specific to host plants.

Abstract: Pestalotiopsis species is an important group of endophytic fungi. Endophytic Pestalotiopsis distributed in roots, stems, leaves and reproductive parts of its host plants. Twenty-three endophytic Pestalotiopsis species have been identified. The colonization rates of endophytic Pestalotiopsis in observed plants were greatly different. Endophytic Pestalotiopsis was a dominant group in the tissues of Rhizophora apiculata, Cocos nucifer, Taxus yunnanensis, Camellia sasanqua, Fragraea bodenii and Cordemoya integrifolia. Most of endophytic Pestalotiopsis colonized more than one host plant, however, a few of them colonized only one. The distributions of endophytic Pestalotiopsis are related to ecological and environmental conditions and location of host plants. Some endophytic Pestalotiopsis act either as parasites or as saprophytes due to the different stage of host plants and (or) environmental conditions. Endophytic Pestalotiopsis produced a variety of secondary metabolites including antitumor components (taxol and torreyanic acid), antifungal and antibacterial components (cyclohexenone, torreyanic acid and pestaloside) showing a bright future of application.
Assessment of the Molluscicidal Activities of Sasanqua Saponin  [cached]

Abstract: This study is aimed at finding out the molluscicidal activities of Sasanqua Saponin extracted from the residue of camellia oleasa (tea-cake seeds). The sasanqua saponin was obtained from Chenxi Chemical plant, Peoples’ Republic of China. The molluscicidal activities were tested in the laboratory and against the eggs, juvenile and adult snails of Oncomelania hupensis and the intermediate host of schistosoma japonicum (intestinal schistosomiasis). The immersion technique was adopted in the experiments. Sasanqua saponin extracted from the residue of Camellia oleasa (tea-cake seeds) was provided by Chenxi Chemical Plant, Peoples’ Republic of China. The mollusciciding activities of the sasanqua saponin against eggs. Juvenile and adult Oncomelania hupensis snails (intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum) were carried out in the laboratory and the field using immersion technique. The mortality rate of adult snails exposed to 10 ppm of sasanqua saponin at 20°C for 48 h was 96% and Lc90 were 2.76 and 10.34 ppm respectively. At 5 ppm exposure concentration for 48 and 72 h, the mortality rate was 96 and 100%, respectively. Lc50 and Lc90 after 48 h were 1.31 and 3.10 pm, respectively. The hatching rate snail eggs immersed in 5 ppm of sasanqua saponin after 72 h were 14%. There was on hatching of eggs at 10 ppm of sasanque saponin while the blank or control had 78% hatching rate. The mortality rates for juvenile snails exposed to 10 ppm of sasanqua saponin were 93.3 and 100% respectively after 48 and 72 h of incubation. Toxicity test showed that sasanqua saponin do not have any adverse effects on silver carp.

Abstract: Dihydroberkleasmin A (1), a new ester-substituted sesquiterpenoid related to the eremophilane class, together with the known compound berkleasmin C (2), were isolated from the fermentation broth of the plant endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis photiniae. The structure of dihydroberkleasmin A (1) was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The stereochemistry was assigned by comparison of the NMR spectroscopic data with those of berkleasmin A.

Abstract: Virgin oils obtained from seeds of Camellia oleifera (CO), Camellia reticulata (CR) and Camellia sasanqua (CS) were studied for their triacylglyceride composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Levels of fatty acids determined by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance analysis were similar to those reported for olive oils (82.30%–84.47%; 5.69%–7.78%; 0.26%–0.41% and 8.04%–11.2%, for oleic, linoleic, linolenic and saturated acids, respectively). The CR oil showed the best antioxidant potential in the three in vitro models tested. With regard to EC 50 values (μg/mL), the order in DPPH radical-scavenging was CR (33.48) < CO (35.20) < CS (54.87). Effectiveness in reducing power was CR (2.81) < CO (3.09) < CS (5.32). IC 50 for LPO inhibition were 0.37, 0.52 and 0.75 μg/mL for CR, CO and CS, respectively. All the oils showed antimicrobial activity, and exhibited different selectivity and MICs for each microorganism tested ( E. coli, B. cereus and C. albicans). B. cereus was the less sensitive species (MIC: 52.083 ± 18.042 for CO; 41.667 ± 18.042 for CR; 104.167 ± 36.084 for CS mg/mL) and the E. coli was the most sensitive to camellia oil’s effect. The standard gentamicin presented higher MIC for E. coli (4.2) than the CR (MIC= 2.6) and CO (MIC = 3.9) oils.

Abstract: The correct name of causal agent of gray leaf spot Camellia is Pestalotiopsis maculans (Cda.) Nag Raj.Both Pestalotia guepini Desm.and Pestalotiopsis guepini (Desm.) Stey.should be its synonyms.In this paper the morphological characteristics,cultural characters, pathogenicity,the host plant range,and soluble protein electrophoresis patterns of Pestalottopsis maculans are described based on the taxonomic study on the specimens and isolates collected from different parts of China since 1978.

Abstract: 通过室内盆栽试验,研究5种有机地表覆盖物(木屑、松针、核鳞、树皮、枯叶)对城市园林植物茶梅土壤三参数(温度、含水量、电导率)、养分、微生物的影响,同时对其土壤肥力综合评价。结果表明,在灌木茶梅地表覆盖不同的有机覆盖物后,土壤温度和水分都呈升高趋势,土壤电导率除了覆盖木屑处理略高于对照(不覆盖)之外,其他覆盖处理都低于对照;土壤速效磷、有机质、速效钾含量都明显增加,速效氮含量变化则各有差异,土壤的pH值都呈下降趋势;土壤放线菌和细菌的数量都高于对照。灌木茶梅覆盖地表有机物处理后,通过对其土壤的三参数、养分及微生物相关分析可知,土壤温度与电导率呈极显著的负相关,速效磷与温度呈显著的正相关而与pH值呈显著的负相关,硝态氮与真菌数量呈显著的负相关,铵态氮与放线菌数量呈显著的正相关;运用主成分分析法对有机覆盖物处理后茶梅土壤肥力进行评价,土壤肥力综合得分排名为:核鳞>枯叶>树皮>松针>木屑>对照。由综合得分排列顺序可知,覆盖核鳞和枯叶的茶梅土壤肥力综合得分均处于平均线以上,覆盖树皮、松针、木屑的土壤肥力综合得分虽然低于平均线,但是它们的综合得分却都高于对照处理,表明有机地表覆盖物对茶梅土壤肥力改善起非常重要的作用。
The pot experiment was to study the effects of five kinds of organic mulch(sawdust,pine needles,nucleus scale,bark and withered leaf)on three soil parameters(temperature,water content and electrical conductivity),nutrient and microorganism status in urban garden plant Camellia sasanqua,and the comprehensive evaluation of its soil fertility.The results suggested that,after covering with different organic mulch,soil temperature and moisture content were both elevated.The soil electrical conductivities of every cover treatment except sawdust were lower than that of control(not covered).The levels of soil available phosphorus,organic matter and available potassium were increased significantly,and soil pH values were decreased.Changes of available nitrogen content were different.The number of soil bacteria and actinomycetes was higher than that of control.The results of correlation analysis showed that after covering with organic mulch on the soil of Camellia sasanqua,there was an obvious negative correlation between soil temperature and conductivity,and the available phosphorus had significantly positive correlation with temperature,while the negative one with pH value.There was a negative correlation between nitrate nitrogen and fungi,and a significant positive correlation between ammonium nitrogen and actinomycetes.Principal component analysis was used to evaluate the soil fertility of Camellia sasanqua after covering organic mulch,the comprehensive score ranking was:nucleus scale>withered leaf>bark>pine needles>sawdust>control.The ranking suggested that the synthesis score of soil fertility covering with nucleus scale and leaves was above average.Synthesis score of soil fertility covering with sawdust,pine needles and bark was below the average,but the comprehensive scores of these treatments were higher than those of the control,which indicated that organic mulch had played an important role in improving soil fertility of Camellia sasanqua.

Abstract: during 2006 to 2009 season symptoms of a canker disease were observed on twigs and branches of young and mature persimmon trees (diospyros kaki l.) cv. fuyu in the states of santa catarina and paraná in the southern brazil. the cankers result in severe damage and reduced production. isolations from the margins of these cankers revealed a genus of pestalotiopsis. koch's postulates were confirmed using two isolates of the pathogen which was identified as pestalotiopsis diospyri.
