Microgeographic Song Variation in the Chinese Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinenesis) in Urban Areas of Hangzhou City

Abstract: Between May and August 2002, microgeographic song variations of the Chinese Bulbul {Pycnonotus sinen-sis) were studied in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province in eastern China. We recorded 511 morning songs of 80 male Chinese Bulbul at eight locations: four locations in extensive mixed forest and 4 locations in urban woodlots, within an area of about 60 km2. We analysed the acoustic characteristics of typical sentences and their syllables of 160 songs, and ran-domly selected 20 songs for each location. The results showed that the Chinese Bulbul has obvious microgeographical song variations; specifically, that eight microgeographic song dialects were found in our survey area and each dialect had a typi-cal song sentence. The microgeographical song variations of the Chinese Bulbul in Hangzhou occurred at different levels of acoustic characteristics, such as hearing, oscillogram, syllable composition, sonagram and spectrum. Obvious boundaries between microgeographical song dialects and also multi-bilingual individuals could be found in some survey locations. Ad-ditionally, the mixed areas in where individuals with different microgeographical song dialects occurred could be also found in our survey. The occurrence of microgeographical song dialects in the Chinese Bulbul might be related to individual dispersal of and changes of the habitats in urban areas.

Abstract: this paper deals with acoustic communication in the red-vented bulbul pycnonotus cafer. this species emits a high variety of vocal signals that can be classified on the basis of their acoustical features and context of production. individuals sang throughout the year and most songs were discrete and stereotyped. the songs were composed of strophes (phrases) with minor structural variations of elements that were preceded and followed by a temporal gap (3 to 12s). most strophes were composed of 2 to 6 elements that were often dissimilar in structure and ranging from 0.98 to 4.5 khz. the biological function of the song appeared to be to maintain pair bonds and to synchronize breeding activities. different types of context-specific calls were identified. individuals produced type-i alarm calls (fast and wide-band, 1.03 to 6.36 khz) under low predation pressure andtype-ii calls (narrowfrequency range, 1.37 to 3.39 khz) under high predation pressure. roosting calls were fast and wide-band signals phonetically similar to type-i alarm calls. three types of begging/contact calls were recorded in nestlings/fledglings. greeting calls and flight calls were composed of complex phrases, like song, but were short and used for proximate functions.

Abstract: 中文摘要:2013年对北京奥林匹克森林公园白头鹎的种群数量和栖息地进行了全年调查。通过样线法和行为观察,记录了白头鹎的种群数量动态、年龄结构、行为等数据。发现白头鹎数量夏、秋季多,冬、春季少。白头鹎对生境具有明显的选择偏好,偏爱仿自然生境的北园和游人不易接近的密林和湿地区域。
英文摘要:The population size and habitat of Pycnonotus sinensis in Beijing Olympic Forest Park was recorded in 2013 using line transect survey method. The result showed that the population size of P. sinensis in summer and autumn was larger than that in winter and spring. Territorial defense of the red-whiskered bulbul, Pycnonotus jocosus (Pycnonotidae), in a semi-wild habitat of the bird farm

Abstract: The territorial behavior of the red-whiskered bulbul, Pycnonotus jocosus, was studied in the semiwild habitat of a bird farm compound in the District of Chana, Songkhla Province, the south of Thailand. The male and female birds were bred and reared in the farm till they reached maturity following which they were released to the wild. A mating pair was later formed and their territory established in the farm area. A decoy was used to simulate a natural intruder to the defended area. Ten test stations were sited in the four cardinal points of the compass and with reference to the farmhouse. The experiments were conducted during the pre-nesting and nesting periods. It was found that territorial boundary was marked by the resident male’s aggressive calls and threat displays to the decoy. The territory covered an area of approximately 0.3 hectare in which it was used for foraging and nesting. The size remained the same in both pre-nesting and nesting periods, but the territorial behavior during the nesting period was evidently more vigorous than that in the pre-nesting period. The intensities of territorial behavior had been hypothesized to be associated with diurnal foraging rhythms. But the finding was contradictory to this prediction. There was no significant difference in the intensity of territorial behavior (P > 0.05) at the three time regimes in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon. It was suggested that the resident bird’s aggressive behavior might be associated with the degree of hunger pang.

Abstract: 甲状腺激素对动物的基础产热有调节作用,甲状腺活性的增加往往与基础代谢的增加相伴行。通过每日饲喂甲状腺素(T4)研究了甲状腺机能亢进对白头鹎(Pycnonotus sinensis)代谢产热的影响。代谢率的测定采用封闭式流体压力呼吸计测定,细胞色素C氧化酶(COX)采用铂氧电极-溶氧仪测定,反应温度为30℃,肝脏和肌肉的线粒体状态4呼吸采用铂氧电极-溶氧仪测定,反应温度为30℃,线粒体蛋白的测定以牛血清蛋白作为标准,采用Folin-phenol方法,测定肝脏和肌肉组织的蛋白质含量。与对照组相比,甲亢组的基础代谢率(BMR)明显升高;肝脏及肌肉组织状态4呼吸增加;肝脏和肌肉线粒体的COX活力升高。

Abstract: 光周期是四季环境变化的最直接表现因素之一,并影响动物的生理变化特征。为探讨光周期驯化对白头鹎(Pycnonotus sinensis)体重、器官重量及能量代谢的影响,以室温28℃、不同光周期 (16L ∶ 8D,LD组和8L ∶ 16D,SD组)对两组白头鹎进行为期4周的光周期驯化,测定其体重、各器官鲜重和干重、基础代谢率(BMR)和食物摄入能、排泄能及同化能并计算同化率。结果发现,SD组个体体重、内部器官(肝、小肠)重量、BMR及同化率相应显著高于LD组个体;短光照刺激白头鹎显著降低摄入能、排泄能及同化能。这些结果表明:光周期对白头鹎的体重、器官重量、BMR及能量收支有着一定影响,并且短光照较长光照更能引起白头鹎体重、器官重量及能量代谢的明显变化,同时验证了"中心限制假说",即白头鹎BMR与中心器官代谢(肝、小肠等)具有相关性,中心器官是改变白头鹎BMR的主要原因之一。

Abstract: 为了解环境噪声对白头鹎(Pycnonotus sinensi)鸣声频率的影响,在浙江临安和安徽阜阳两地分别对白头鹎在高低噪声水平环境中的鸣声做了研究。把用数码录音机记录到的鸣声输入计算机,利用计算机声谱分析系统进行分析,再对每一鸣声的每个音节的主频进行Mann—Whitney U检验。结果显示:高噪声水平区和低噪声水平区相比,在两地白头鹎每一鸣声的各音节主频中,最低和最高主频以及第I、Ⅱ音节的主频都有显著提高;在阜阳第Ⅲ音节的主频也有显著提高。这表明白头鹎可以通过提高声音频率来避免环境噪声对鸣声的影响,从而保证噪声环境中声信息的有效传递;而噪声对各音节的不同影响也表明,同一鸣句的各音节,对于噪声通讯中的信息识别,具有不同的地位。

Abstract: 本文运用计算机鸣声分析技术,对嵊泗和杭州两地白鹎夏季的主要鸣声类型和声谱特征等方面进行了分析比较。两地白头鹎的鸣声类型,时域结构和频谱特征都有很大的差异。这可能与两地生境类型的差异有关。但变音句鸣声的音节组合方式和单音节鸣声的构成等方面仍有共同之处。
Inter-Species Differences Between Lead Concentration in the Feathers of Pycnonotus leucogenys and Streptopelia seneglenses from Different Cities of Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This investigation was conducted to determine lead accumulation in feathers of wild white-cheeked bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogenys) and wild palm dove (Streptopelia seneglenses) in order to find which is more suitable to monitor the lead environmental pollution. Feather samples of 270 of Pycnonotus leucogenys and 309 of Streptopelia seneglenses were collected from three different cities of Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, Riyadh and Al-Kharj) and were analyzed for lead by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results obtained in this study revealed that the feathers of Streptopelia seneglenses have more capacity to retain lead than Pycnonotus leucogenys in Jeddah and Riyadh (p<0.001) and Al-Kharj (p<0.05). The results showed that the lead was concentrated significantly (p<0.001) more in vane vexillum as compared to quills and complete feather and was more concentrated in the bird feathers of Riyadh (p<0.01) than of the other two cities and least in Al-Kharj (p<0.001) in the order of Al-Kharj < Jeddah < Riyadh. These results demonstrate that Streptopelia seneglenses is more suitable as a biological monitor for environmental lead exposure than Pycnonotus leucogenys.
