Abstract: The measurement of soil hydro-physical properties under broadleaved Korean pine and dark coniferous forests on the northern slope of Changbai Mountains showed that under these two forest types, soil bulk density and porosity had the same variation trend with increasing soil depth, i. e. , bulk density and capillary porosity increased, while total porosity and non-capillary porosity decreased. The average bulk density, total porosity, capillary porosity and non-capillary porosity in 0-100 cm soil layer were 1. 41 g x cm(-3), 52. 31% , 46. 11% and 6. 20% under broadleaved Korean pine forest, and 0. 98 g x cm(-3) , 50. 65% , 40. 32% , 10. 33% under dark coniferous forest, respectively. Owing to the differences in soil hydro-physical properties, the water storage capacity in 0-100 cm soil layer was 619. 89 t x hm(-2) under broadleaved Korean pine forest, but 1 033.05 t X hm(-2) under dark coniferous forest. For these two forests, their soil water characteristic curves were consistent with the general one.

Abstract: Detrended Correspondence Analysis is used to analyse the distribution of Korean Pine-broadleaved forest along the environmental gradients and the relation between varities of forest types and environmental changes. The results show that the integrated changes of various factors, such as water temperature and humidity in response to increasing altitudes in Changbai mountain, are the main gradient which decides the diversity of Korean Pine-broadleaved forest, the next is the changes of local topography and micro-topography. The technique of secondary ordination is applied to classify the Korean Pine-broadleaved forest and a classification system is given at the end of the paper.

Abstract: In this paper, the respiration rates of soil, foliage, and stem and branch in the broadleaved Korean pine forest ecosystem of Changbai Mountains were measured by Li-6400 CO2 analysis system in 2003, with the microclimate factors determined synchronously. The correlation models of ecosystem respiration with environmental factors were established, and the respiration rate of each component of the ecosystem was estimated based on the vegetation characteristics of the broadleaved Korean pine forest. The results showed that the annual total respiration rate of the ecosystem was 1602. 8 g C x m(-2), with a mean of (4. 37+/-2. 98) micromol x m(-2) x s(-1) , and the respiration of soil, foliage, and stem and branch contributed about 63% , 21% , and 16% of the total, respectively. There was a significant correlation between system respiration and daily mean air and soil temperature, and about 87% and 95% of the ecosystem respiration could be explained by the air and soil temperature, respectively.

Abstract: In this paper, the species composition, seasonal dynamics, and spatial distribution patterns of herbs were examined in a 25 hm2 broadleaved Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) mixed forest plot in Changbai Mountains. The results showed that the plot had a relatively high herbaceous richness, with 102 species belonging to 40 families and 84 genera, and the Shannon index, Simpson index, and Pielou index was 3.52, 0.96 and 0.75, respectively. The three indices varied dramatically with growth season, whereas the species abundance decreased linearly from early spring to autumn. The species richness and abundance showed irregular distribution, indicating that herbaceous species were microenvironment-dependent. Slope aspect had significant effects on herbaceous species richness and abundance. Northern and eastern slopes had higher species richness and abundance in early spring than southern and western slopes, whereas it was in adverse in late summer and autumn.

Abstract: The measurement of CO2 turbulent exchange in a broadleaved Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountains by an open-path eddy covariance system showed that with near neutral atmospheric stratification, the CO2 and vertical wind components over canopy in inertial subrange followed the expected -2/3 power law, and the dominant vertical eddy scale was about 40 m. The frequency ranges of eddy contributions to CO2 fluxes were mostly within 0.01-2.0 Hz, and the eddy translated by low frequency over canopy contributed more of CO2 fluxes. The open-path eddy covariance system could satisfy the estimation of turbulent fluxes over canopy, but the CO2 fluxes between forest and atmosphere were generally underestimated at night because the increment of non turbulent processes, suggesting that the CO2 fluxes estimated under weak turbulence needed to revise correspondingly.

Abstract: Based on the 3-year successive automatic measurement of photosynthetic active radiation above and under the crown of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountains, as well as the seasonal observation on leaf area index, a semi-empirical model was established to estimate the crown leaf area index of the forest. The results showed that this model could well reflect the seasonal variation of crown leaf area. From the comparison of 3-year leaf area index series, it was found that the date when the leaf area index began to rise was postponed if the date when its air temperature stably surpassed 0 degrees C came late. The dynamics of the leaf area index in whole growth season could be divided into three stages, i. e., rising, relatively stable, and dropping, and at each stage, there was a greater correlation between the leaf area index and the accumulated temperature above 0 degrees C, which could be expressed by Logistic curve and linear equation. The problems existing in the observation and estimation of forest crown leaf area index were discussed.

Abstract: Based on the measurements of leaf photosynthesis, the light response curves of Pinus koraiensis, Tilia amurensis, Quercus mongolica and Fraxinus mandshurica photosynthesis in broadleaved Korean pine forest of Changbai Mountains were fitted with rectangle and non-rectangle hyperbolae. The results showed that rectangle hyperbola was simpler for fitting, while non-rectangle hyperbola was more reasomable because of its fitted results better matched physiological meanings. The values of intrinsic quantum efficiency for CO2 uptake (alpha), light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (Pmax), and dark respiration rate (Rd) of the four tree species were higher when fitted with rectangle hyperbola than with non-rectangle hyperbola, while that of light compensation point (Lcp) varied with tree species. The values of alpha and Rd obtained from the two hyperholae had the same sequences, i.e., F. mandshurica > T. amurensis > Q. mongolica > P. koraiensis for alpha, and F. mandshurica > Q. mongolica > T. amurensis > P. koraiensis for Rd, but for Pmax and Lcp, the sequences were not the same.

Abstract: Based on the data of three years successive automatic measurement with five horizontal quantum PAR sensors, this paper studied the spatiotemporal characteristics of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the understory of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountains, in contrast with above-canopy PAR. It was found that the annual dynamics of above-canopy PAR showed two or more peaks, which was mainly affected by the weather conditions such as cloudy, foggy and rainy events. The annual dynamics of understory PAR followed the same trend of above-canopy PAR in non-growth season, but was steady and lower in numerical value in growth season. On clear days, larger differences were observed in the diurnal variation and frequency distribution of the understory PAR. As for the spatial variation of the understory PAR, the coefficient of variation (CV) was smaller in non-growth season (about 0.15) than in growth season (> 0.22), with the greatest in August. On the clear days in growth season, the understory PAR had a greater spatial variation when the solar elevation angle was between 38 degrees and 48 degrees (at 9:00-10:00 or 13:00-14:00).
