Abstract: An effort is made to define and describe on a conceptual basis the psychological depth dimension of the 4-dimensional classification theory of human behaviour (Raubenheimer, 1978) as a construct of human behaviour. Cognitive and non-cognitive behavioural correlates of different cognitive styles are also related on a logical basis to the construct psychological depth orientation. Opsomming Die sielkundige diepte-dimensie as konstruk van menslike gedrag in die 4-dimensionele klassifikasieteorie van menslike gedrag (Raubenheimer, 1978) word konseptueel omskryf en afgebaken. Kognitiewe en nie kognitiewe gedragskorrelate van verskillende kognitiewe style word ook op 'n logiese wyse aan die konstruk sielkundige diepte-ori ntasie gekoppel.

Abstract: Cognitive and personality correlates of attention. The principal aim of the study was to determine the cognitive and personality correlates of attention. Two contrasting groups were formed on the basis of scores from a self report inventory of attention. These two groups were compared in terms of the NSAG, the SAT, the 16PF and the JPQ. With the aid of the Hotelling T2 it was found that the vectors of means scores of the two contrasting groups differed statistically significantly from one another in respect of both the cognitive and personality variables. Opsomming Die hoofdoel van die studie was om die persoonlikheids- en kognitiewe korrelate van aandaggewing vas te stel. Twee kontrasterende groepe is saamgestel aan die hand van tellings op 'n selfverslaggewende vraelys oor aandaggewing. Hierdie twee groepe is met mekaar vergelyk ten opsigte van die NSAG, die SAT, die 16PF, en die JPV. Met behulp van Hotelling se T'toets is vasgestel dat die vektore van gemiddeldes van die twee groepe statistics beduidend van mekaar verskil ten opsigte van sowel die kognitiewe as die persoonlikheidsmetings.

Abstract: The development of an instrument (the RD-Depth Questionnaire, Form B) for measuring the construct psychological depth orientation is discussed. Results show that the questionnaire has satisfactory internal consistency and that the items of the questionnaire in general measure the same characteristic. Further research is needed to refine and improve the questionnaire until it meets all the psychometric requirements of a good measuring instrument. Opsomming Die ontwikkeling van 'n instrument (die RD-Diepte Vraelys, Vorm B) vir die meting van die konstruk sielkundige diepteori ntasie word bespreek. Resultate dui daarop dat die vraelys bevredigende interne bestendigheid toon en dat die items van die vraelys oor die algemeen dieselfde eienskap meet. Verdere navorsing word egter nog vereis om die vraelys te verfyn en te verbeter sodat dit aan al die psigometriese vereistes van 'n goeie meetinstrument sal voldoen.

Abstract: Some psychological aspects of Maslow's motivation theory are discussed with a view to pointing out the usefulness of this theory in the industrial situation. It is suspected that industrial psychologists do not always interpret Maslow's theory correctly. The aspect of responsibility in the need for selfactualization seems to be undervalued, in some instances completely unrecognized. A logical conclusion drawn is that self-actualization, in accordance with Maslow's own description, is related to productivity. Opsomming Maslow se motiveringsteorie wat uit die kliniese sielkunde ontspruit het, is ook deur bedryfsielkundiges van nader beskou, veral in hoe verre dit met produktiwiteit verband het. Enkele sielkundige aspekte word bespreek ten einde op die nut van hierdie teorie in die bedryfsituasie te wys. Die vermoede bestaan dat die teorie deur bedryfsielkundiges nie altyd korrek vertolk word soos Maslow dit self uiteensit nie; veral word die verantwoordelikheidsaspek in die selfuitlewingsbehoeftes misken en nie verreken nie; 'n Logiese konklusie is dat selfuitlewing, soos deur Maslow beskryf, wel verband met produktiwiteit het.

Abstract: The relationship between the psychological contract and organisational commitment. The aim of this study is to design a measuring instrument with acceptable metric characteristics for the strength of the psychological contract within the South African context, and to determine empirically the relation between the strength of the psychological contract and organisational commitment. The Dhammanungune Model served as foundation for the design of the Strength of the Psychological Contract Questionnaire which consists of two scales namely, a needs expectation scale and a needs fulfilment expectation scale. The items of each scale have been formulated in the manner that ensures that the respondent reacts consecutively to two instructions namely, (a) the level of the expectation and (b) the importance of the expectation. This questionnaire was administered together with the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire to two population groups within the military environment. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was calculated between the strength of the psychological contract and organisational commitment and the significance of the correlations was evaluated. Opsomming Die doel van die studie is om 'n meetinstrument met aanvaarbare metriese eienskappe vir die sterkte van die sielkundige kontrak vir Suid-Afrikaanse omstandighede te ontwerp en om empirics die verband tussen die sterkte van die sielkundige kontrak en organisasieverbondenheid te bepaal. Die sterkte van die sielkundige kontrak vraelys is op grond van die Dhammanungune-model ontwerp en het uit twee skale naamlik, die behoefteverwagting- en vervullingsverwagtingskale bestaan. Items vir eike skaal is sodanig geformuleer dat die respondent agteropeenvolgens op twee instruksies naamlik (a) die vlak van die verwagting en (b) die belangrikheid van die verwagting moet reageer. Die vraelys is saam met die organisasieverbondenheidsvraelys op twee populasies uit 'n militere omgewing toegepas. Die Pearson- produkmomentkorrelasie tussen die sterkte van die sielkundige kontrak en organisasieverbondenheid is bereken en die betekenisvolheid van die korrelasies is geevalueer
The relation between cognitive ability and psychological readiness of semi-skilled employees in the South African mining industry  [cached]

Abstract: Political change has, especially in the South African mining industry, created the need for the application of culturefair tests with the view of affirmative action. These tests are especially applied to measure cognitive ability, which is widely accepted to be positively correlated with work performance. The question arose whether cognitive tests are able to predict psychological readiness to perform as implicated by Hemstein and Murray's (1994) work on the "Bell Curve". In this study, no meaningful relation between cognitive ability and psychological readiness was found. This reflects some support for a multi-dimensional approach to the study of intelligence. Opsomming Politieke verandering het veral in die Suid-Afrikaanse mynbedryf, gelei tot 'n behoefte aan die toepassing van kultuurbillike toetse vir die doeleindes van regstellende aksie. Hierdie toetse word toegepas om kognitiewe vermoe te meet en daar word wyd aanvaar dat dit positief met werksprestasie korreleer. Die vraag het ontstaan of hierdie toetse daartoe in staat is om sielkundige gereedheid om te presteer, voorspel soos geimpliseer deur Hemstein en Murray (1994) se werk oor die "Bell Curve". In hierdie studie is geen betekenisvolle verband tussen kognitiewe vermoe en sielkundige gereedheid om te presteer, gevind nie. Daar word dus steun vir 'n multi-dimensionele benadering tot die bestudering van intelligensie, gevind.

Abstract: A multi-disciplinary approach to Practical Ecclesiology In this contribution the author proposes a multi-disciplinary approach to ecclesiology. Ecclesiology receives some attention in all theological disciplines; however, the various methods and approaches of the different disciplines leads to divergent results. This diversity in ecclesiology could be very positive if a multi-disciplinary approach could be developed. Contributions by theologians of the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa (NRCA) are used as an example of divergent approaches to ecclesiology. The conclusion is reached that Practical Ecclesiology could serve as a theological discipline where different ecclesiologies could be integrated to the benefit of theological training and the church in general. Abstract: In Suid-Afrika word min navorsing gedoen oor faktore wat kognitiewe belading tydens onderrig en leer be vloed. Die gebrek rig ’n uitdaging tot ons sosiale aanspreeklikheid teenoor leerders met spesiale onderwysbehoeftes aangesien die beginsels van gelykheid en billikheid nie altyd in hierdie spesialiseringsveld nagekom word nie. Hierdie artikel berig oor ’n sekondêre analise van die resultate van twee onlangse ondersoeke deur Maguvhe (2005) en Gumede (2010). Die twee ondersoeke het ten doel gehad om te bepaal hoe onderwysers lewenswetenskappe aan blinde leerders en leerders met swak sig onderrig. Die doel met hierdie sekondêre analise was om die oorspronklike resultate verder te analiseer om vas te stel hoe die beginsels van kognitiewe belading, modaliteit en ruimtelike ori ntering tydens die onderrig van lewenswetenskappe aan blinde leerders en leerders met swak sig verreken word. Die sekondêre analise bevestig dat blinde leerders selde aan ondersoeke, eksperimente en aktiwiteite deelneem. Wanneer dit wel gebeur, is sulke interaksies basies, elementêr en bevestigend. Omdat die onderrig hoofsaaklik narratief van aard is, verhoog die moontlikheid dat kognitiewe belading die ouditiewe funksies, in die afwesigheid van visuele en taktiele stimuli, sal laat afneem. Taktiele stimulering is in ’n groot mate afhanklik van faktore soos gespesialiseerde hulpbronne, goedopgeleide onderwysers, Braille-geletterde onderwysers, lesers en skrywers en ’n goeie begrip van hoe ’n holistiese metodologie die taktiele sintuie van blinde en visueelgestremde leerders mag optimaliseer. Spatial orientation and cognitive load as factors influencing learning amongst blind learners in the Life Sciences. Little research is done in South Africa on factors influencing cognitive load during teaching and learning. It challenges our social accountability towards learners with special education needs as the principles of equity and equality are not always achieved in this field of specialisation. This article reports on a secondary analysis conducted on the results of two recent investigations by Maguvhe (2005) and Gumede (2010) that focused on the teaching of Life Sciences to blind and visually impaired learners. The purpose of the secondary analysis was to determine from the original results how the principles of cognitive load, modality and spatial orientation are accounted for when Life Sciences is taught to blind and visually impaired learners.
