Dealing with phraseology in business dictionaries: focus on dictionary functions – not phrases
Leroyer, Patrick
Linguistik Online , 2006,
Abstract: The language of written business communication is characterised by the extensive use of phraseology, not only in terms of collocations and idiomatic expressions, but also of standard phrases in prototypical business genres. In any case, the phraseological information should be included in business dictionaries (in the following referred to as BDs) in accordance with the planned dictionary functions. Hence, the selection and presentation of the phraseological information should be decided by the lexicographer on the basis of the user needs alone and not on the recommendations of the phraseological literature about lexicographical practice. In this paper, I will firstly explain why lexicography and phraseology, although closely associated in a large number of studies, are quite different disciplines, and how their shared interest for dictionary practice in general is based on radically different views. I will then discuss the dictionary functions of BDs and focus on a number of concepts featuring extensive phraseological solutions to show and argue that dealing with phraseology in BDs should always keep focus on dictionary functions.
Nuwe dinge in Nuwe woorde* — 'n oorsig oor buitemikrostrukturele leksikografiese vernuwings
H Beyer
Lexikos , 2000,
Abstract: New Things in New Words* — an overview of nonmicrostructural lexicographic innovations. This review article focuses on the nonmicrostructural lexicographic innovations which are apparent in the dictionary under discussion. The emerging notion of user-friendliness in modern lexicographic practice does in no way imply that lexicographic innovations should be limited to the microstructure of dictionaries. Innovative approaches to the presentation of information in the user's guide (where a user's guide exists in a dictionary!) and other elements of the front and back matter in dictionaries play as an important role in making a dictionary more user-friendly as do innovations in the microstructure. New Words/Nuwe woorde, as the newest contribution to the collection of Afrikaans translation dictionaries, exhibits some remarkable nonmicrostructural lexicographic innovations. These innovations are highlighted, evaluated and criticised in this article.
"Nuwe Woordeboek sonder Grense": A Typological and Communicative Bridge
M Steyn, L Gouws
Lexikos , 2005,
Abstract: Within the South African lexicographical context, there have been several pleas for Afrikaans learner's and school dictionaries that incorporate innovative strategies and provide for specific identified target users and their particular problems. Nuwe Woordeboek sonder Grense (NWSG) is an Afrikaans learner's dictionary that is aimed at a specific group of users, can be used for text reception and text production and forms part of an established textbook series. Through new strategies and adaptations, this dictionary tries to form a bridge between different typological categories and to be a functional instrument for use in the classroom. In accordance with the theo-retical formulation of dictionary functions, NWSG tries to further communication through initial support in and eventual assimilation of the foreign language. In this article, theoretical insights regarding learner's dictionaries as well as practical examples from NSWG are combined to illus-trate the possibilities of a more user-friendly product.

Lexikos , 2011, DOI: 10.5788/20-0-135
Abstract: ABSTRACT: In view of the benefits of both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, a new type of dictionary which combines the strong points of a monolingual learner's dictionary with those of a bilingual dictionary was designed and introduced into some Catalan primary and secondary schools: the Easy English Dictionary with a Catalan–English Vocabulary. This article looks in detail at this new kind of dictionary: its philosophy, the way it functions, its advantages over other kinds of dictionaries and the fact that the monolingual part is specifically aimed at Catalan learners of English. Additionally, the article deals with the pedagogical functions of illustrations as well as the adequacy of the dictionary to the lexical needs and requirements of Catalan learners of English in primary and secondary education. Keywords: LEARNER'S DICTIONARY, USERS, TYPOLOGY, BRIDGE LANGUAGE, TEXT RECEPTION, MACROSTRUCTURE, TEXT PRODUCTION, MICRO-ARCHITECTURE, FRAME STRUCTURE ***** OPSOMMING: Nuwe Woordeboek sonder Grense: 'n Tipologiese en kommu-nikatiewe brug. Namibian University Entrants' Concepts of 'a Dictionary'
Herman L. Beyer,André K. Faul
Lexikos , 2011, DOI: 10.5788/20-0-160
Abstract: ABSTRACT: This article reports on a survey conducted in 2009 among students registering for their first year of study at the University of Namibia. The aim of the study was to determine these school leavers' concepts of 'a dictionary' and to what extent they perceive dictionaries to be of potential help in satisfying needs for specific types of linguistic information. Furthermore, the survey attempted to determine if the variables of frequency of dictionary use, exposure to dictionary pedagogy at school and dictionary ownership had any influence on respondents' concepts of 'a dictionary'. In comparison to the literature and other similar studies, this study takes a new approach by measuring respondents' concepts of dictionaries against a pre-constructed dictionary profile based on validated assumptions while focusing on the pre-consultation situation instead of on a reflection on past dictionary consultation procedures. The findings indicate that Namibian school-leavers do not grasp the complete information potential of monolingual dictionaries. Also, although school syllabuses of language subjects require dictionary skills to be taught, about a third of the respondents were not exposed to dictionary pedagogy at school, while those respondents who were exposed to some form of dictionary pedagogy do not demonstrate a substantially different concept of dictionaries from those who did not undergo dictionary training. This result questions the quality of dictionary pedagogy where it does take place. The effects of frequency of dictionary use and dictionary ownership on respondents' concepts of dictionaries also seem to have been minimal.
ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE – NEW BUSINESS VALUE PERSPECTIVES  [cached]
M. De Vries,A.C. J van Rensburg
South African Journal of Industrial Engineering , 2012,
Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Organisations today are characterised by conglomerate organisation structures that evolve through mergers and acquisitions. Corporate offices need to add superior knowledge and skills to ensure that the collection of diverse businesses is operating as more than independent units. A new management approach is required to create synergies between the diverse businesses, their processes and system landscapes. Enterprise Architecture (EA) creates value on a corporate level by facilitating process/information technology alignment and synergy between different strategic business units (SBUs). Unfortunately many EA implementations seemed to fail owing to a short-term financial focus and measurement. This article explores the possibilities of linking EA to a corporate balanced scorecard (BSC) to demonstrate its long-term financial improvement capabilities in supporting the business strategy. The aim is to use the corporate BSC context to direct EA objectives in creating contextualised value for a specific enterprise.

A Framework to Discover New Business Processes through Business Data Integration
Yih-Feng Hwang,David Rine
Journal of Emerging Trends in Computing and Information Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: It is common to see that many telecommunications businesses IT-ICT systems are hosted within large data-driven telecommunications business telecommunications companies such as Verizon, after merging with former competitive companies, such as MCI. To continue providing business services to all existing customers, after completing each business merger, most existing telecommunications business IT-ICT systems from each merged company remain the same. However, to win new and sustain current customer markets among such customer data-driven competitive companies, new and improved telecommunications business processes and services from the integrated company resulting from the merger are required. However, developing new telecommunications business processes and services on top of multiple existing telecommunications business IT-ICT systems is a challenge. In this paper, we introduce a new framework that can be used to develop customer data-driven telecommunications business IT-ICT systems on top of existing telecommunications business IT-ICT systems, supporting new business processes and services. Using this framework, the existing telecommunications business IT-ICT systems will be reused at a system level, instead of focusing on reusing processes or reusing source-codes, to support new business services. This framework also provides a simpler approach to integrate the existing telecommunications business IT-ICT systems.
