Journal of Achievements in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering , 2009,
Abstract: Purpose: This paper represents the current status of welding industry of South Korea - how much the welding industry accounts for in monetary terms in the manufacturing industry of South Korea.Design/methodology/approach: We classify welding industry into welding equipment industry and materials & the welding engineering sub-industry. To decide the portion of the welding industry in other engineering industry, we adopt the Welding-Related Expenditures, Investments, and Productivity Measurement in U.S. Manufacturing, Construction, and Mining Industries, a report published by AWS in 2002. The statistical analysis was performed based on the NSO and KITA data.Findings: In South Korea, the welding-related portion in the engineering industry showed much higher figures - about 9 times higher in production amount and over 5 times in export amount - than the welding equipment and materials industry. In addition, the total production of the welding industry amounted to 2.6 billion $, indicating that the welding industry holds a very important place in the entire domestic industries.Research limitations/implications: The welding industry of South Korea was statistically analyzed using the welding related expenditure of the manufacturing industries. Research limitations/implications: This research quantitatively showed the relative importance of the welding industry in South Korea.Originality/value: Due to the nature of welding industry, it is difficult to identify the boundary of welding industry. In addition, monetary impact of welding industry was not revealed in practical manner. In this paper, we categorize the welding industry into two sub-industries and analyze the statistical data with our framework to reveal monetary impact of welding industry. With our results, it is possible to estimate the economical effects of welding industry in South Korea.

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2015.51016
Abstract: In recent years, the trading contact between China and South Korea has become more and more close. In the 21st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea 2013, China has become South Korea’s largest export market and largest import market. At the same time, South Korea has become China’s fourth largest exporter and second largest importer of foreign trade, which contributes to the rapid development of?manufactured products intra-industry trade between China and South Korea. This paper summarizes the development status of industrial manufactured products intra-industry trade between China and South Korea since 1992, and uses empirical analysis, then drawing a conclusion that the direct investment from South Korea to China, total merchandise trade between China and South Korea, and the economic development level of China have great influences on the level of intra-industry trade between China and South Korea, but the degree of the influence is different for different types of manufactured goods. Finally, this article proposes policy recommendations to promote the further development of manufactured products intra-industry trade between China and South Korea.

Abstract: To improve the quality of life in a modern society it is essential to reduce the distance between basic research and applications, whose crucial roles in shaping today's society prompt us to seek their understanding. Existing studies on this subject, however, have neglected the network character of the interaction between university and industry. Here we use state-of-the-art network theory methods to analyze this interplay in the so-called Framework Programme--an initiative which sets out the priorities for the European Union's research and technological development. In particular we study in the 5th Framework Programme (FP5) the role played by companies and scientific institutions and how they contribute to enhance the relationship between research and industry. Our approach provides quantitative evidence that while firms are size hierarchically organized, universities and research organizations keep the network from falling into pieces, paving the way for an effective knowledge transfer.

Abstract: The purpose of this this research is to suggest comprehensive pricing schemata that software developers can use in the integrated state of software uses. To do so, we have reviewed the pricing criteria that the current fields of business administration treat andoffered the basis of pricing systems. Then we have applied the prices of software products in Korea to the systems and earned abundant price payment units. As for the research works of software pricing at the present, however, it seems that they are mainly focused on the uses and functions of some specific software rather than on general variables that affect the software pricing policies of PC and Client/Server environment. There have been many researches on individual consumption features such as on the case of upgrade, on the case of outsourcing like ASP, on the case of pricing package items, or on the case of ERP software.[1-5] In other words, there have been few researches on the schemata of pricing that software developers can use. This paper aims to suggest a comprehensive pricing schemata that software developers, sellers, and distributers can use regardless of the state of software uses. To do so, first, itreviews the criteria of pricing that are frequently discussed in the current fields of economics and management and thereby establishes the basis that leads to a pricing schemata. Then the prices of software in Korea will be applied to the schemata, which will eventually make it possible to produce the complete pricing schemata unique in Korea.

Abstract: This paper aims at analyzing the problem of unemployment and the role of the entrepreneur in reducing the rate of unemployment through innovations. Having reviewed the basic theories of unemployment, the paper explains the role of the entrepreneur as developed by Schumpeter in reducing the rate of unemployment. Not surprisingly, unemployment can be reduced over the course of the business cycle but cannot be eliminated under capitalism, because a low rate of unemployment will increase wages and power of the working people
Vertical intra-industry trade and product quality: the case of South Korea, 1996–2003  [PDF]

Economics and Business Letters , 2012,
Abstract: This paper contributes to empirical research of intra-industry trade, especially vertical intraindustry trade (VIIT), by two aspects. Firstly, we separate VIIT into higher-export-price VIITand lower-export-price VIIT. Secondly, we give attention to R&D and FDI stock in explaining VIIT determinants. Applied to panel data representing South Korea’s bilateral trade with 15 OECD countries and Taiwan from 1996 through 2003, this alternative makes anintricate understanding of the VIIT determinants possible. Main empirical findings are that South Korea’s R&D investments focus on price competitiveness while its inward FDI seeks efficiency and its outward FDI seeks a market in this period.

Abstract: This study aims to identify cases of new international ventures in the Brazilian sugarcane industry, specifically as regards ethanol production, i.e., companies that are established from start to have an international profile. The paper explores the case of one such enterprise in the light of the theories addressed. In the last few years, a rising number of companies with this profile have appeared. This runs contrary to the main classical theories of internationalization, which present this process as evolutionary. As for the sugarcane industry, it has expanded considerably in recent years, which led many groups to invest in this segment. This study is a descriptive, qualitative piece of research and is based on the case study of a company recently established in this sector. Analyzing the chosen organization and comparing it to the studied theories, the authors concluded that there is, indeed, a type of organization with the profile of a new international venture. Key-words: Internationalization. New international ventures. Sugarcane industry. Brazil. Novos empreendimentos internacionais. Setor sucro-alcooleiro. Brasil.
Longitudinal Trends in Networks of University-Industry-Government Relations in South Korea: The Role of Programmatic Incentives  [PDF]

Physics , 2009,
Abstract: This study examines the longitudinal trend of systemness in networked research relations in South Korea using a triple-helix (TH) indicator of university-industry-government (UIG) relations. The data were harvested from the Science Citation Index (SCI) and its counterparts in the social sciences (SSCI) and the arts and humanities (A&HCI). The total number of Korean SCI publications has grown rapidly since 1965. However, the TH indicator shows that the network dynamics have varied considerably according to the research policies of the national government. The collaboration patterns, as measured by co-authorship relations in the SCI noticeably increased, with some variation, from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. However, inter-institutional collaboration in the first decade of the 21st century was negatively influenced by the new national science and technology (S&T) research policies that evaluated domestic scientists and research groups based on their international publication numbers rather than on the level of cooperation among academic, private, and public domains. The results reveal that Korea has failed to boost its national research capacity by neglecting the network effects in science, technology, and industry.

Abstract: Taiwan and Korea are in fierce competition in the TFT-LCD panel industry and together dominate over 70% of the international market share. Business strategies in Taiwan primarily rely on Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) whereas Korea focuses principally on vertical integration, including development of its own international brand architecture. Additionally the financial structures of the manufacturers in both countries are different resulting in varied business models and financial risk exposures. The purpose of this research is to explore the performance efficiency in utilizing resources and performance variance before and after a global financial crisis based on influences upon the different business models and different financial structures. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to evaluate a company’s relative performance based on multiple parameters, to develop a matrix of risk and return and Malmquist Productivity Index to demonstrate their efficiency and technical productivity trend before and after the global financial crisis. The empirical results indicate: (1) Korea's manufacturers have a higher ratio of G&A expenses v.s. Taiwan’s manufacturers having a higher fixed asset ratio and debt ratio. The revenue of companies in both countries had been significantly affected by global financial crisis. (2) Company’s performance is consistent with the economic trends and high-risk firms have been hit harder by the phenomenon of decline in the efficiency of performance. (3) Korea manufacturers during the period of 2004-2008 represent lower risk and higher return compared with Taiwan manufacturers. Outstanding performance manufacturers had provided direction for motivating Taiwan manufacturers towards vertical integration and to reduce their debt ratios. (4) There are different phenomenon that influence Taiwan and South Korea productivity improvement, and show overall industry improvement was mainly attributable to technological phenomenon.
