A Prototype Student Advising Expert System Supported with an Object-Oriented Database  [PDF]

Abstract: Using intelligent computer systems technology to support the academic advising process offers many advantages over the traditional student advising. The objective of this research is to develop a prototype student advising expert system that assists the students of Information Systems (IS) major in selecting their courses for each semester towards the academic degree. The system can also be used by academic advisors in their academic planning for students. The expert system is capable of advising students using prescriptive advising model and developmental advising model. The system is supported with an object-oriented database and provides a friendly graphical user interface. Academic advising cases tested using the system showed high matching (93%) between the automated advising provided by the expert system and the advising performed by human advisors. This proves that the developed prototype expert system is successful and promising.

Abstract: This article, on the basis of the expert’s analyses and theories of the forecast of heavy-rain, summarizes a variety of the current instruments and methods of forecast and, according to the train of thought of the highrank forecasters, distills their experiences in forecasting heavy-rain into an inference-tree of 106 junctures from which 101 rule-bases are derived. The logical calculation is automatically carried out with our introduced and developed PROLOG, one of the intelligent languages by means of micro-computer. This process adopts the uncertain inferential method based on the theory of fuzzy sets, breaks through the limits of two-value logic and is characteristic of the thinking of human brain.

Abstract: Dust explosions always claim lives and cause huge financial losses. Dust explosion risk can be prevented by inherently safer design or mitigated by engineering protective system. Design of explosion prevention and protection needs comprehensive knowledge and data on the process, workshop, equipment, and combustible materials. The knowledge includes standards, expertise of experts, and practical experience. The database includes accidents, dust explosion characteristics, inherently safer design methods, and protective design methods. Integration of such a comprehensive knowledge system is very helpful. The developed system has the following functions: risk assessment, accident analysis, recommendation of prevention and protection solution, and computer aided design of explosion protection. The software was based on Browser/Server architecture and was developed using mixed programming of ASP.Net and Prolog. The developed expert system can be an assistant to explosion design engineers and safety engineers of combustible dust handling plants.

Abstract: Decision support through information technology become a part of our everyday lives. In this paper we produce a Fuzzy Expert System (FES) to diagnosis of back pain disease based on the clinical observation symptoms using fuzzy rules. The clinical observation symptoms which processed by fuzzy expert system may be used fuzzy concepts to describe that symptoms such as (little, medium, high). To deal with fuzzy concepts in clinical observation symptoms we should be used fuzzy rules to hold this concepts. The parameters used as input for this fuzzy expert system were Body Mass Index (BMI), age, and gender of patient as well as the clinical observation symptoms. The proposed expert system can help to diagnosis of back pain disease and produce medical advice to the patient. The system implemented and tested using clinical data that is correspond to 20 patients with different back pain diseases. The proposed system implemented using Visual Prolog programming language ver. 7.1.

Abstract: Now-a-days, many organizations have tried to obtain ISO 9001:2000 certification. This International Standard promotes the adoption of a process approach in order to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer requirements. This process approach is used in the time of developing, implementing and improving the effectiveness of a Quality Management System (QMS). This study discusses the development of an expert system for the QMS document management and internal quality audits. The costly and time consuming steps to attain the ISO 9001:2000 status, which at the present moment is carried out by quality auditors, has inspired us to develop an expert system that will be able to mimic the role of the auditors. This expert system will be useful for the initial stage of the certification process, the document management or termed as adequacy auditing stage. It is believed that, by using the system, the process of the ISO Certification could speed up. Adding to that, the system is capable of providing suggestions and advices just like a consultant would. The software languages used are AMZI! Prolog and Microsoft Visual Basic.

Abstract: Refactoring is an established technique from the OO-community to restructure code: it aims at improving software readability, maintainability and extensibility. Although refactoring is not tied to the OO-paradigm in particular, its ideas have not been applied to Logic Programming until now. This paper applies the ideas of refactoring to Prolog programs. A catalogue is presented listing refactorings classified according to scope. Some of the refactorings have been adapted from the OO-paradigm, while others have been specifically designed for Prolog. Also the discrepancy between intended and operational semantics in Prolog is addressed by some of the refactorings. In addition, ViPReSS, a semi-automatic refactoring browser, is discussed and the experience with applying \vipress to a large Prolog legacy system is reported. Our main conclusion is that refactoring is not only a viable technique in Prolog but also a rather desirable one.

The most useful application of the system can be in distance education and self-training.
