The Japanese economic enigma  [PDF]
Gy?rgy Simon,Gy?rgy Simon Jr.
Medjunarodni Problemi , 2005, DOI: 10.2298/medjp0504449g
Abstract: The subject of this article is the Japanese enigma: the long-lasting extraordinarily rapid economic growth, the so-called Japanese economic miracle, and then a very sharp set-back in the growth rate, the prolonged recession. The authors, using an endogenous growth model, have proven that an economic miracle did not happen in Japan either: the very rapid growth proceeded in conformity with the general regularities of economic development. The main cause of prolonged recession, according to the empirical results, is the currency shock, occurred on the basis of an international agreement in the mid-1980s, which decelerated the hitherto extremely dynamic development of Japanese exports, considerably retarding the main factor of rapid economic growth.

Notes on Time's Enigma  [PDF]
L. Mersini-Houghton
Physics , 2009,
Abstract: Scientists continue to wrestle with the enigma of time. Is time a dynamic or a fundamental property of spacetime? Why does it have an arrow pointing from past to future? Why are physical laws time-symmetric in a universe with broken time-reversal symmetry? These questions remain a mystery. The hope has been that an understanding of the selection of the initial state for our universe would solve such puzzles, especially that of time's arrow. In this article, I discuss how the birth of the universe from the multiverse helps to unravel the nature of time and the reasons behind the time-reversal symmetry of our physical laws. I make the distinction between a local emerging arrow of time in the nucleating universe and the fundamental time with no arrow in the multiverse. The very event of nucleation of the universe from the multiverse breaks time-reversal symmetry, inducing a locally emergent arrow. But, the laws of physics imprinted on this bubble are not processed at birth. Time-reversal symmetry of laws in our universe is inherited from its birth in the multiverse, since these laws originate from the arrowless multiversal time.
The SW Sex enigma  [PDF]

Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1093/mnras/sts294
Abstract: The SW Sex stars are a class of cataclysmic variables, originally identified because they shared a number of enigmatic properties - most notably, single-peaked emission lines instead of the double-peaked lines one would expect from their high-inclination accretion discs. We present high time-resolution spectrophotometry of the eclipsing nova-like variables SW Sex and DW UMa, two of the founding members of the SW Sex class. Both systems show single-peaked Balmer and HeII 4686A emission lines that appear to originate from a region in the disc that lies close to, but downstream of, the bright spot. The emission-line light curves are consistent with the finding from X-ray and ultraviolet observations that we predominantly see the flared disc rim and the unobscured back portion of the disc in these systems. In DW UMa, the HeII 4686A emission line originates from close to the white dwarf and exhibits flaring. Such flares have been used to argue for magnetically-channelled accretion, as in the intermediate polars, but the lack of a clear periodicity in the flares argues for a simpler model in which we are viewing the central regions of the disc through the non-uniform upper edge of a flared disc rim. We also observe narrow, blue-shifted, transient absorption features in the Balmer lines of DW UMa, which we attribute to blobs of material ejected from the system, possibly by a magnetic propeller, that happen to be passing between us and the binary. Our results suggest that the solution to the SW Sex enigma is a combination of dominant bright-spot emission and a self-occulting disc. We also propose a simplified classification scheme for nova-like variables.
The enigma of the two interleaved phonebooks  [PDF]
Hector Alarcon,Thomas Salez,Christophe Poulard,Jean-Francis Bloch,Elie Raphael,Kari Dalnoki-Veress,Frederic Restagno
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: Many of us are familiar with a classical demonstration of the strength of friction: take two phonebooks, interleave their sheets and try to separate them by pulling on their spines. This demonstration has been carried out spectacularly by attempting to pull the books apart with people, trucks, lifting a car, and even two military tanks, only to fail and suggest that the inner friction between these sheets prevails. The simple explanation often given is that gravity provides the normal force that generates the tangential friction, but this hypothesis is easily proven to be wrong as there is no discernible difference between such an experiment carried out in the vertical or horizontal direction. In this Letter, we study the force needed to separate two books as a function of the number of sheets, the thickness of the sheets, and the interleaving distance. In particular, we show that the force required to separate the books increases more than exponentially with the number of sheets. The strength of the system is to be due to the operator: the person, car, truck, or tank, amplifies any small friction arising from the normal force acting on the boundaries of the stack. We present a simple model that captures all the data into a self-similar master curve. The model depends on one single dimensionless amplification parameter, and thus gives insight into the mechanisms at play in this deceivingly complex system. In addition to solving a long-standing familiar enigma related to the classical problem of friction, this model system provides a framework within which one can accurately measure friction forces and coefficients at low loads, and opens the way to the technologically-relevant engineering of friction in complex assemblies from the macro to the nanoscale.
O enigma da democracia em Marx
Pogrebinschi, Thamy;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092007000100005
Abstract: this article aims at analyzing the concept of marx on true democracy as developed especially in the critique of hegel?s philosophy of right, in order to indicate how he poses himself as the "resolved enigma" for modern ways of political organization. in doing so, the article argues that such enigma points towards the contradiction between state and civil society, which for marx constitutes the main characteristic of political modernity. it consequently also argues that a solution revealed to the enigma of the "true democracy" implies in overcoming contradiction, what can only happen through the instauration of a new place for politics: the real community founded on free association of equally free men.
