Abstract: due to the building of the hydroelectric power plant of ilha solteira, in the late 60s, some areas have been deforested and were used as "loan areas". thus, the soils belonging to these locations were subtracted and these areas' physical, chemical and biological properties became inappropriate. this work aimed at evaluating the use of chemical and organic fertilization to improve the degraded subsoil and replanting with mycorrhizal stryphnodendron polyphyllum ("barbatim?o"). the area is located at the experimental station (fepe), unesp/ilha solteira campus, in selvíria - ms. using the design of randomized blocks with four replications of 250 m2 plots (10 x 25 m), 10 treatments were evaluated: control; liming; fertilizing n + p; liming + n + p; n + p + water hyacinth; n + p + sugar cane bagasse; n + p + water hyacinth + sugar cane bagasse; liming + n + p + water hyacinth; liming + n + p + sugar cane bagasse; and liming + n + p + water hyacinth + sugar cane bagasse. chemical characteristics of the subsoil and plant growth were evaluated five times (june, august, november and december 2005, and march of 2006) and the root percent colonization was evaluated in march 2006. after a year the subsoil still remained acidic and of low chemical fertility. the steam diameter and plant height showed increasing results along the period, with the highest values for the treatments that received liming, n + p and organic residues. the percent mycorrhizal colonization and number of spores were positively influenced by the presence of organic residues.

Abstract: O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental Nova Baden, da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (EPAMIG), em Lambari, MG, objetivando avaliar o desempenho dos adubos verdes guandu (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) e crotalária-júncea (Crotalaria juncea L.), com e sem incorpora o da biomassa, na recupera o da fertilidade de um solo (Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro distrófico) degradado, cultivado com braquiária (Brachiaria decumbens Stapf.). Empregou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial de parcelas subdivididas, com três repeti es, colocando-se nas parcelas o manejo da biomassa, e nas subparcelas, as leguminosas e a braquiária. As três culturas foram manejadas na fase final de florescimento das leguminosas, quando se fizeram amostragens de biomassa para determina o de produ o de matéria seca, concentra o e conteúdo de nutrientes. Realizaram-se avalia es de amostras de solo em três épocas (90, 120 e 150 dias após o manejo) e seis profundidades (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 e 60-80 cm). O guandu se destacou na primeira avalia o quanto às melhorias na fertilidade do solo, e a crotalária-júncea, de mineraliza o mais lenta, na segunda. Na terceira avalia o, n o foram encontrados benefícios dos adubos verdes nas propriedades químicas do solo.

Abstract: A extra o mineral e a retirada de espessas camadas de solo para obras diversas (áreas de empréstimos) costumam gerar superfícies de solos degradados, com fertilidade inferior à de um solo produtivo. O lodo de esgoto, por apresentar elevados teores de macronutrientes e de matéria organica, constitui uma alternativa na recupera o desses solos. Com a finalidade de se estudar os efeitos do lodo de esgoto na recupera o de um Latossolo Vermelho degradado, foi avaliada a sua fertilidade, como indicador de sua qualidade. O delineamento experimental foi definido como blocos casualizados, com 4 tratamentos e 4 repeti es, sendo: testemunha, fertilizante mineral e doses de 30 e 60 Mg ha1 de lodo à base seca. Para o tipo e condi o do solo utilizado e dentro do período de estudo de 12 meses, pode se afirmar que o lodo de esgoto promove um incremento na qualidade química do solo, observado pelo aumento significativo em fósforo, potássio, magnésio, matéria organica e CTC. The mineral extraction and the thick soil layers removal for several and diversified other purposes (loan areas) usually generate degraded soil surfaces with lower fertility when compared to a productive soil. The sewage sludge, which presents high concentrations ofmacronutrients and organic raw material, represents an alternative in the recuperation of these soils. Aiming at studying the effects of sewage sludge in a degraded dark red Latosol, its fertility was evaluated as an indicator of its quality. The experimental design was defined as randomized blocks, with 4 treatments and 4 repetitions, being as follows: attested, mineral fertilizer, 30 and 60 Mg ha1of dry based sludge. According to the type and soil conditions studied during 12 months, it can be concluded that the sewage sludge promotes an increment in the soil chemical quality, being this fact observed by the significantly increase in phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, organic raw material and CEC.

Abstract: the antinociceptive activity of the crude extract and fractions of stryphnodendron adstringens (martius) coville (barbatim?o) was evaluated. three experimental models of pain induction were used: abdominal writhing, formalin, and hot plate. the results demonstrated an antinociceptive effect of barbatim?o in the experimental models of writhing induced by acetic acid and pain induced by formalin. however, the extracts did not significantly alter latency time on the hot plate in mice. these results suggest that barbatim?o extract has a peripheral antinociceptive effect.

Abstract: the contents of tannins in the barks of barbatim?o species, stryphnodendron adstringens (mart.) cov. and s. polyphyllum (mart.), were analysed monthly during one year. results were correlated with climate conditions (rainfall, humidity and mean temperature) by chemometric methods. principal component analysis of the data showed a tendency for higher production of tannins in the warm and wet season, suggesting that environmental factors can affect the levels of tannins in those plants.

Abstract: Neste estudo avaliou-se a influência de fatores edáficos sobre a produ o de fenóis totais e taninos em duas espécies de barbatim o (S. adstringens e S. polyphyllum). Os dados foram coletados em quatro localidades da regi o de cerrado, em Goiás, nas esta es seca (julho de 2001) e chuvosa (fevereiro de 2002). Foram amostrados indivíduos (árvores) de S. adstringens nos municípios de Rio Verde, Bela Vista de Goiás e Silvania, e indivíduos de S. polyphyllum, em Rio Verde, Bela Vista de Goiás e Abadia de Goiás; cinco de cada município, totalizando trinta indivíduos. O material coletado constou de uma amostra de casca por espécime e esta o, e amostras de solo tomadas em duas profundidades (0-20 cm e 20-40 cm), na esta o seca. Fenóis totais e taninos na casca foram determinados pelo método de Hagerman & Butler, e as análises do solo, segundo o método atualmente preconizado pela Embrapa. Os dados foram tratados estatisticamente por análise de componentes principais. Observou-se que solos com baixa fertilidade química est o associados com maiores níveis de fenóis totais e taninos, mormente para S. polyphyllum. Maiores produ es desses metabólitos foram observadas no período chuvoso. A produ o de fenóis totais e taninos, na esta o seca, esteve positivamente correlacionada à textura arenosa dos solos; enquanto, na esta o chuvosa, mostrou-se mais associada com a satura o por alumínio no solo. This study evaluated the influence of edaphic factors on total phenols and tannins yield of two species of barbatim o (S. adstringens and S. polyphyllum). Data were collected in four ";cerrado"; locations in Goiás State, Brazil, during the dry (July 2001) and rainy season (February 2002). S. adstringens specimens (trees) were sampled in the municipalities of Rio Verde, Bela Vista de Goiás and Silvania, and specimens of S. polyphyllum were sampled in Rio Verde, Bela Vista de Goiás and Abadia de Goiás; five specimens were collected from each county, totaling thirty specimens. The collected material consisted of one bark sample per specimen and season, and soil samples at two depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) in the dry season. Bark total phenols and tannins were determined by Hagerman & Butler method, and soil analyses followed the current methods recommended by Embrapa. Data was statistically analyzed by principal component analysis. Abstract: the experiment was conducted at the empresa de pesquisa agropecuária de minas gerais, nova baden experimental station, in lambari, mg, brazil, aiming at evaluating the performance of the green manures pigeonpea (cajanus cajan (l.) millsp.) and sunnhep (crotalaria juncea l.) with and without incorporation of the biomass, on the recovery of fertility of degraded soil cultivated with brachiaria (brachiaria decumbens stapf.). experimental design used was of randomized block in factorial scheme of split plots with three replications, putting the biomass handling in the plots and both the legumes and brachiaria in the subplots. the three crops were cut and handled at the late flowering stage of the legumes, when samplings of the plant material were done for assessing dry matter yield, concentration and amount of nutrient. evaluations of soil samplings at six depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 e 60-80 cm) and three periods (90, 120 and 150 days after handling) were performed. pigeonpea stood out in the first evaluation concerning the improvements in soil fertility and sunnhep and slower mineralization, in the second. in the third evaluation, no benefits from the green manure on the chemical properties of the soil were found.

Abstract: this study evaluated the cicatrizant effect of an ointment containing 1% of the ethyl-acetate fraction extracted from the stem bark of "barbatim?o" (stryphnodendron adstringens), in wounds made in the skin of rats, after 4, 7 and 10 days of treatment. control wounds were treated with a base ointment without extract. the proliferation of keratinocytes in the area of reepithelialization was evaluated by counting the number of epithelial cells that were blocked in metaphase by vincristine sulfate. the length of the reepithelialized margin and the contraction of the wound were measured. topical application of the "barbatim?o" ointment stimulated proliferation of the keratinocytes, but had no effect on the length of the epithelium or on the contraction of the wounds.

Abstract: the barbatim?o is a tree which bark is rich in tannin. it is used on popular medicine as a wound healing agent, in the treatment of gastric lesions, as anti-leishmanial agent and as anti-inflammatory. red blood cells (rbc) are labeled with technetium-99m (tc-99m) and are utilized in many procedures in nuclear medicine. some authors have reported that drugs (natural and synthetic) can alter the labeling of rbc with tc-99m. this study evaluates the effect of barbatim?o infusion on the labeling of red blood cells (rbc) and plasma (p) proteins with tc-99m. heparinized blood from wistar rats was incubated with nacl 0.9% as control and different concentrations of barbatim?o infusion. following the addition of stannous chloride (sncl2), as reducing agent, and tc-99m, as sodium pertechnetate, the blood samples were centrifuged. p and rbc were separated and were also precipitated with trichloroacetic acid 5%. insoluble (if-p and if-rbc) fractions were isolated. the percentage of radioactivity in all the samples was determined. all the barbatim?o infusion concentrations decreased the labeling of rbc, if-p and if-rbc. we can speculate that the barbatim?o infusion interfered on the labeling of rbc due to the redox properties and/or it can also act as a chelator of the stannous ion.

Abstract: stryphnodendron adstringens (mart.) coville, 1910 is a small tree, distributed widely throughout the cerrado region of brazil and named "barbatim?o" by the tupi-guarani tribes, which presents astringent properties. its ethnopharmacological uses comprise, among others, anti-inflammatory and wound healing action, and it is used in the treatment of diarrhea and gynecological problems. the phytotherapeutic use of 'barbatim?o' is largely related to its tannin content, which is abundant in its bark. the main goal of the present study was to evaluate the cytotoxic, mutagenic, and genotoxic potential of the lyophilized solution of the stem bark of s. adstringens, using the ames test, the sos-inductest and the sos-chromotest. s. adstringens presented cytotoxic activity in all tested systems, did not present mutagenic activity detectable by the ames test and sos-chromotest, and showed some genotoxic effect on the sos-inductest. however, the metabolization of the extract by s9 fraction attenuated its genotoxic and cytotoxic activities.
