Chilean historians of Medicine do not mention significant pertussis epidemics in the country during XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries, and scarce information is available about epidemics occurred during most of the XIX century, emphasizing one that happened in La Serena in 1851 and Valdivia in 1853. In the last third of the XIX century, epidemics that happened in Santiago as in other Chilean regions were described, reporting that, between 1892 and 1895, 8,181 patients died of pertussis, high numbers most likely due to the severity of epidemics observed since 1890. Measles and pertussis epidemics often co-existed, or were antedated or followed by the other.

A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study was carried out in 120 pregnant women with bronchial asthma in "José Félix Ribas" district of the Venezuelan municipality of Sucre, from January to December 2010, to characterize them clinically and epidemiologically. For gathering information a data sheet and a questionnaire that was processed with version 6.0 of Epi Info program were used. Adolescents (56.6 %) prevailed in the case material, of them 55.8 % had active or passive contact with the cigarette smoke, and 68.3 % presented with grade I of bronchial asthma. Also, trigger factors prevailed (100.0 %), followed by causal factors (95.8 %), so that clinical and epidemiological characteristics of these pregnant women make a health problem of bronchial asthma in this population group.

Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652010000600003
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological, clinical and laboratorial profile of patients with baggio-yoshinari syndrome (bys), who underwent internment at the instituto de infectologia emilio ribas in s?o paulo, brazil, during the period from july 1990 to july 2006. bys is a new brazilian tick-borne disease caused by borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato microorganisms that resembles features of lyme disease (ld), except for its epidemiological, clinical and laboratorial particularities. from 60 patients' records with positive serology to b. burgdorferi done by elisa and western-blotting methods, 19 cases were diagnosed as having bys, according to criteria adopted at lim-17 hcfmusp, the brazilian reference laboratory for the research of bys. the other 41 remaining patients displayed miscellaneous infections or auto-immune processes. the beginning of symptoms in bys group varied from one day to six years, from the onset of the disease. four of 19 patients were included in acute disease stage, and 15 in latent. general unspecific symptoms were identified in almost all cases, with high frequencies of fever (78.9%) and lymphadenomegaly (36.8%). six patients had skin lesions (31.5%); six arthralgia or arthritis (31.5%) and eight neurological symptoms (42%). interestingly, two patients showed antibodies directed to b. burgdorferi exclusively in cerebrospinal fluid. since bys is a new emergent brazilian zoonosis and its diagnosis is sometimes complex, all the new knowledge about bys must be scattered to brazilian medical specialists, aiming to teach them how to diagnose this amazing tick-borne disease and to avoid its progression to chronic irreversible sequels

This research was developed with the objective of describing tests prepared by teachers of English at the Elementary School. Forty tests prepared by four teachers were the main research data. For the description and analysis of the tests, Genesee and Upshur (1998)'s work was taken as a basis. The conclusions indicate that: a) concerning the contents, tests concentrate mainly on grammar, on vocabulary, and on the structure of simple sentences and b) concerning the techniques, there is a predominance of techniques that require limited answers, easier to both prepare and correct, which require little linguistic knowledge from the teacher.
