Animal cloning: advances and prospects

Abstract: Few recent advances have revolutionized the developmental biology as the animal cloning has. Since the birth of Dolly, the sheep, in 1996, which was the first derived clone of a mature animal, a new scientific era began. It has been characterized by growing demystification that differentiated cells are unalterable entities in its nuclear organization and chromatin structure, and by a better understanding of the mechanisms that regulate the development. Throughout this paper, we will review some of the achievements and limitations of the techniques used, both in therapeutic and in the reproductive cloning, as well as the perspectives that its application allows to glimpse within a close future. At the same time, we will point out some considerations regarding the ethical debate that surrounds such a controversial issue.

Abstract: Objective To review and summarize the latest advances and achievements in medical ethics research since "the Eleventh Five-Year Plan",and to infer the possible developmental prospects of medical ethics in "the Twelfth Five-Year Plan".Methods Bibliographical methods were employed to retrieve the academic achievements and dynamic developments in medical ethics since 2006 to obtain a brief overview and to conduct an in-depth study.Results Since "the Eleventh Five-Year Plan",a series of achievements in medical ethics,especially on the upgrade of the themes,the expansion of the scope,and the renovation of the methods,have been achieved.Research on medical ethics carried out in the army,such as the research on military medical ethics,bioethics,and disaster and epidemic ethics,also yielded several new achievements and played leading roles in the military and practical fields.Conclusions In the period of "the Twelfth Five-Year Plan",the localization of medical ethics research should be promoted,the level of original research should be improved,and the academic contingent and platform should be strenuously constructed.In terms of research direction,continuously strengthening basic and general research of bioethics,highlighting the characteristics and superiority of military medical ethics,enhancing non-combat and combat operation research,and strengthening ethics research for the application of advanced biotechnology in the military field are necessary.

Abstract: Biotechnology is a multi-disciplinary branch of science whose applications are diverse and because science is dynamic, there is tremendous development in the use of biotechnology in the world. Advances of biotechnology are prominent in Nigeria, where government initiative, the private sector as well as that of NGOs are recognisable. Advances that have been commercialized are stated, other national provisions for potential developments are also well enumerated. On the other hand, challenges, to be overcome, so as to produce have also been identified. Heterostyly in Angiosperms and Its Evolutionary Significance

Abstract: Heterostyly is a distinct floral polymorphismand herkogamy pattern and includes distyly and tristyly. Heterostyly has been reported in 31 families of angiosperms. It is considered to play an important role in protecting the functional pistil and stamens, ensuring reproduction by avoid selfing, and increasing male fitness and outcrossing rates by reducing s exual interference between female and male function. Here, we review recent advances in heterostyly research, with emphases on (1) types, floral syndrome, ancillary polymorphism and population structure of heterostylous species; (2) taxonomy, origin and evolution of angiosperms that exhibit heterostyly; and (3) the evolutionary significance of heterostyly . We also discuss prospects for further research. Our review provides a database for further study of the evolutionary biology of heterostylous species and points to the significance of heterostyly in the evolution of breeding systems of plants.

Abstract: With the advent of some new techniques, the past several years have been a time of fascinating discoveries on the origin and early evolution of angiosperms. Rapidly accumulating data have resulted in notable progress, and this field is becoming an active and exciting branch of botany. The paper, first, reviews the studies on early angiosperm evolution in the last fifty years; then discusses recent advances that have been made since early 1980s from five aspects, i.e., molecular systematics, cladistics, micromorphology of flowers under scanning electron microscopy, molecular genetics of floral development and the Cretaceous fossil flowers and other reproductive structures; finally, several future directions of the field are briefly discussed.

Abstract: Lys-derived alkaloids, including piperidine, quinolizidine, indolizidine, and lycopodium alkaloids, are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. Several of these alkaloids have beneficial properties for humans and have been used in medicine. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the biosynthesis of these alkaloids are not well understood. In the present article, we discuss recent advances in our understanding of Lys-derived alkaloids, especially the biochemistry, molecular biology, and biotechnology of quinolizidine alkaloid (QA) biosynthesis. We have also highlighted Lys decarboxylase (LDC), the enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step of QA biosynthesis and answers a longstanding question about the molecular entity of LDC activity in plants. Further prospects using current advanced technologies, such as next-generation sequencing, in medicinal plants have also been discussed.

Colchicine is a toxic natural compound and secondary metabolite commonly produced by plants like Colchicum autumnale and Gloriosa superba. It is originally used to treat rheumatic complaints, especially gout, and still finds its uses for these purposes today despite dosing issues concerning its toxicity. It is also prescribed for its cathartic and emetic effects. Initially oral colchicine has not been approved as a drug by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But now FDA approved colchicine as a drug for some disorders. Colchicine's present medicinal use is in the treatment of gout and familial mediterranean fever. It is also being investigated for its use as an anticancer drug. In neurons, axoplasmic transport is disrupted by colchicine. Due to all the pharmacological application of colchicine, there is urgent need to enhance the properties and increase the production of colchicine with the help of in vitro technologies. The present review is mainly focused on the chemistry of colchicine, its medicinal uses and toxicity.

Abstract: In this paper, we review the progress made in the studies on general circulation and large-scale dynamics. We divide the advances in the studies on the atmospheric circulation and large-scale dynamics into 4 stages, i.e., the studies on atmospheric wave dynamics; the studies on the observational facts of general circulation; the numerical studies on general circulation; and the studies on planetary wave dynamics, wave-mean flow interaction and nonlinear dynamics. Moreover, the prospects of the studies on the atmospheric circulation and large-scale dynamics for the future are also made in this paper.

Abstract: The quality control standards are the key points in the modernization of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), and in recent years, the fingerprinting techniques play an increasingly important role, including fingerprintings based on gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, spectroscopic methods, and so on. Some advances in this area in the past few years are reviewed and some prospects are discussed in this article.
