Abstract: The Junta Patriótica do Norte (JPN) was created a month after Germany’s declaration of war, stating that one of its purposes would be to follow the conflict. However, its efforts were extended and intensified in the postwar period, particularly with respect to assistance to war orphans, the organization of war commemorations, and last but not least, the dissemination and implementation of artistic tributes to the war’s fallen men. This article intends, besides the organic understanding of the institution, to first explore the Junta’s role in the conflict’s mobilization efforts and, second, its role in how the memory – material and immaterial – of World War I in Portugal has be shaped.

Abstract: RAINFALL VARIABILITY IN PORTUGAL AND SOME RELATIONS WITH THE OCEAN-ATMOSPHERE SYSTEM IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC - The scope of this study is to analyse rainfall variability in the Portuguese rainy season (Nov-Mar) during the 20th century, and examine some relations with the sea surface temperatures (SST) and geopotencial heights at 850 hPa (Z850) in the North Atlantic region. To build the Portuguese rainfall index (PRI), a principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on a matrix containing seven Portuguese stations with secular records (variables) and the years 1900 to 1993 (observations). This index is the first principal component (PC), which explains always over 60% of the total variance and all the seven stations used in the PCA have positive correlationswith the first component. Therefore we can assume that the first PC describes the rainfall variability in Portugal and the PCA has detectedonly one coherent area in Portuguese territory. The analysis of cycles reveals a variability that might be linked with the North Atlantic ocean atmosphere system. Very significant cycles of 3/4 or 7/8 years were found either in the PRI or in the first PC of SST time-series. In order to search the causes of the rainfall variability in Portugal, several correlations and composites analysis were made. Correlations between the PRI and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index are always negative for all rainy season months (Nov-Mar). The correlation between the PRI and the SST in North Atlantic shows a central area with significant negative coefficients (west of Portuguese coastline). Positive correlations above 50oN and below 30oN. The correlation between the PRI and Z850 field shows a North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) pattern: positive correlations in the north and negative correlations in the south of North Atlantic region. In additon, a compositive analysis was made for wet and dry years to test the reaction of the SST field. A distinct pattern was found in the SST field for wet and dry years

ABSTRACT Although being completely true that special knowledge is required to make wine, special knowledge is also required to trade it. The development of knowledge to make better wine has occupied the minds of academics, scholars and producers for centuries, but the knowledge of a special effort to do business with wine is embryonic. Historically, the success factors for wine companies lay on production technology and products' quality. However, the growing competitiveness in the market now requires a much more in-depth analysis of consumer behaviour aiming a better satisfaction of their needs. The wine market is growing in sophistication and the opportunities for market segmentation are increasing. This paper provides a broad review of some studies published about the wine consumer behaviour, with applications in the context of market segmentation. Using as segmentation base nine variables that measure the importance attributed to tangible and intangible features in the process of wine acquisition, we propose a classification of the restaurateur managers in the north of Portugal into two groups.

Monthly litterfall production, nutrient concentration and nutrient devolution to the forest floor through litterfall were assessed in four forest stands of Castanea sativa Miller (CS), Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel), Franco var. menziesii (PM), Pinus nigra Arnold subsp. laricio (PN) and Pinus pinaster Aiton, (PP), located close to Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Northern Portugal. Mean annual amounts of litterfall measured during two years decreased in the order PN > PP > PM > CS respectively, 6910, 4115, 3934 and 2759 kg ha-1. Values showed high inter-annual variation, which can be ascribed to the different climatic conditions during the study period. Coniferous species showed a continuous litterfall production, with higher amounts in August and September for PP, September and October for PN and PM. In the case of the CS, there was not litterfall production during part of the year and the highest amounts were observed in October and November. Concerning the proportion of the several components in the litterfall, needles and leaves were largely predominant

Abstract: based on an ethnographic study of a team of adult education agents in an association of local development in the north of portugal, this paper is aimed at studying the relation that these agents establish with the official pedagogical discourse emerging from state-dependent information structures. in order to develop this analysis, basil bernstein's model of pedagogical discourse structure was used for a theoretical basis. the results have showed that, in this particular case, the agents, in spite of having a strongly normative action, are able to establish an active relation with the official discourse. it can be observed that they often readapt this official discourse in their daily activity.

Abstract: the traditional high cattle breeding activity in the mountainous areas of the north of portugal has created a shrubbly landscape. a methodology to characterize the phytostruturale behaviour of these types of communities, based on the quantification of their resistance and resilience (under the point of view of the ecotonical intra and inter-community dynamic), has been the main objective of the present work. the area of the natural park of alv?o (pna) has been selected according to the geographic situation (in the atlantic/mediterranean iberian climatologic transition) and its intensive cattle breeding activity. an apparent adaptation of the shrubby vegetation to fire and cattle pression is demonstrated.

Revista de Ciências Agrárias , 2007,
Abstract: monthly litterfall production, nutrient concentration and nutrient devolution to the forest floor through litterfall were assessed in four forest stands of castanea sativa miller (cs), pseudotsuga menziesii (mirbel), franco var. menziesii (pm), pinus nigra arnold subsp. laricio (pn) and pinus pinaster aiton, (pp), located close to vila pouca de aguiar, northern portugal. mean annual amounts of litterfall measured during two years decreased in the order pn > pp > pm > cs respectively, 6910, 4115, 3934 and 2759 kg ha-1. values showed high inter-annual variation, which can be ascribed to the different climatic conditions during the study period. coniferous species showed a continuous litterfall production, with higher amounts in august and september for pp, september and october for pn and pm. in the case of the cs, there was not litterfall production during part of the year and the highest amounts were observed in october and november. concerning the proportion of the several components in the litterfall, needles and leaves were largely predominant in the following order pm > cs > pp > pn, respectively 83, 78, 68 and 55 %. concentration of nitrogen in the leaves of cs and needles of pm was higher (respectively 11.3 and 10.9 g kg-1) than in pn and pp needles (respectively 7,3 and 5,5 g kg-1). concentration of ca in pm (9,4 g kg-1) was also higher than in the other species, implying an higher amount of ca returned to the forest floor (34.5 kg ha-1 year-1) in the former than in the other species (9.3 to 14.4 kg ha-1 year-1), which positively favour soil surface layer chemical properties in stands of the first species.
