A case-control study was carried out at Adaca doctor's office, belonging to Socorro, a comprehensive community health area, from Valencia municipality in Carabobo state, Venezuela, in order to assess the primary risk factors which influenced on the chronic gingivitis occurrence in 75 teenagers aged 15-18 years from August, 2009 to January, 2010. The selection of both groups was made through the intentional non-probability sampling (that is to say, according to the arrival order). The first group was composed of 25 patients with chronic gingivitis (diagnosed through Lo and Silness′ gingival index), while the second group consisted of 50 patients (2 healthy teenagers per each patient). In the case material, male teenagers were the most affected by the aforementioned gum inflammation, directly related to poor oral hygiene and smoking habit.

Abstract: introduction. gingivitis is considered the more common pathology among periodontal diseases. the purpose of the present survey was to evaluate the possible influence of familiar income, oral hygiene and time passed since the last dental appointment on gingivitis prevalence in adolescents. methods. a population of 677 adolescents was surveyed. for the epidemiological data collection, the criteria of the green & vermillion simplified oral hygiene index (ohi-s) and the l?e & sillness' gingival index (gi) were considered with a previous inter-and intra-searchers calibration (s1 =0.95, s2=0.96, and s1-2 =0.90). results. gingivitis was found in 83% of adolescents; mild gingivitis was the most frequently observed. severity of gingivitis was associated to socioeconomic level and oral hygiene quality; whereas not association was found with age, sex and frequency of dental appointments. conclusions. the high frequency of gingivitis and poor quality of oral hygiene indicate a great need for education in oral health in adolescents.

Abstract: introduction. the establishment of gingival disease is associated to multiple factors; its infectious etiology was determined 3 decades ago. nevertheless, social and cultural factors associated to gingivitis have been less studied. the purpose of the present survey was to evaluate the possible influence of the level of knowledge on oral health of mothers of scholars and oral hygiene quality on gingivitis prevalence of their children. material and methods. a sample of 389 scholars were surveyed. for the epidemiological data collection, the criteria of the green & vermillon simplified oral hygiene index (sohi) and the loe & sillness' gingival index (gi) were considered with a previous inter and intra searchers calibration (ca =89%, cr =93% and k=90%). to evaluate the level of knowledge on oral health, a questionnaire was applied to all mothers. results. only 20.6% of scholars showed gingivitis with not significant statistical differences observed regarding the location of the gingival mucosae (t =1.327, p =0.8179; t =2.131, p =0.4288). nevertheless, a significant statistical relation between the quality of the oral hygiene (p =0.0001) and the level of knowledge on oral health (p =0.05) was found. conclusions. gingivitis prevalence on scholars was less than expected. oral hygiene importance on the establishment and development of the gingival disease was confirmed. the level of knowledge on oral health of mothers influenced the children's risk to present the disease.
