Abstract: hansen's disease has a slow evolution, which mostly affects the adult population. detecting cases in children shows that the endemic continues and there is early exposure of the population to the bacillus. this is an ecological study with the objective of analyzing the occurrence of hansen's disease in children under fifteen in the jequitinhonha valley through epidemiological and operational indicators. the results show that the endemic continues in the region, demonstrating that the health services are not proactive and must implement specific prevention and control measures for this age group in order to reduce the transmission of the disease and the possible damage it can bring to the life of individuals, especially when it affects them in their childhood.

Os adubos verdes utilizados foram: crotalária (Crotalariaspectabilis), feij o-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformis), feij o-guandu-an o (Cajanus cajan), lab-lab (Lablab purpureus), mucuna-an (Mucuna deenringiana) e tremo o-branco (Lupinus albus L.). Green manuring is a positive practice that reduces the impact on agricultural production systems aimed at sustainable land use. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of six legumes used for green manure, the productivity of biomass, land cover and use of photosynthetic active radiation in the region of the Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experiment was conducted during March to October, 2010 in randomized block design with four replications. Green manures were used: Crotalaria spectabilis, Canavalia ensiformis, Cajanus cajan, Lablab purpureus, Mucuna deenringiana and Lupinus albus. Green manures had high yields of biomass, however, different peaks of ground cover and radiation interception were observed. The largest accumulations of dry and fresh matter were observed in C. spectabilis followed by C. cajan. Amongthe species studied, C. ensiformis has a larger growing season, representing great potential for soil covering, and is importantfor the interception of photosynthetically active radiation.

Abstract: No espa o rural brasileiro coexistem a pequena gest o comunitária e grandes consumidores de água.

Abstract: small community administrations and large consumers of water coexist in the brazilian rural area. in recent years, community regulation of resources and the large consumer enterprises have entered into confrontation because of water, forcing a reflection upon the logic of the uses and dialogues between the apparent irrationality of rural populations and the development proposals. this article analyzes the lack of synchronization between those logics and perspectives, analyzing the case of high jequitinhonha, in the northeast of minas gerais. the article initially comments on the recent and growing emergence of water scarcity and how this shortage tends to result in conflict and legislation. then, the regulation of such shortage is discussed _ which consolidated in the brazilian water legislation. following that, the article analyzes the usual water tariffs currently collected in the rural communities of the jequitinhonha valley in minas gerais, and, finally, it contrasts the usual regulations with the water legislation, analyzing the small consumers' absence in the construction of the agencies and in the exercise of legislation.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-06832006000400016
Abstract: the potential acidity is important because it is used in the determination of base saturation and the estimation of lime requirement. the objective of this study was to establish a regression equation to estimate the potential acidity with the smp-ph measured in water under agitation of the smp equilibrium solution with soil samples from the jequitinhonha valley, minas gerais state, brazil. the h + al concentration measured by 0.5 mol l-1 calcium acetate ph 7.0 and smp ph were determined in 50 soil samples at the soil fertility laboratory of the ufvjm (federal university of the jequitinhonha and mucuri valleys). their ph in water ranged from 4.0 to 7.6, organic carbon concentration varied from 1 to 29 g kg-1 and the clay content ranged from 100 to 810 g kg-1. the potential acidity, expressed in cmolc dm-3, can be estimated by measuring the smp ph using the equation: ln (h + al) = 8.26 - 1.124312 ph smp (r2 = 0.97).

Abstract: in the high jequitinhonha region of northeastern minas gerais, brazil, farmers acquire land principally through inheritance: their own, their spouses, or a combination of the two. the owner of the land is, before anything else, an heir; and the land is primarily a family patrimony. the objective of this article is to add to the understanding of brazilian rural society and rural forms of land control by analyzing the interaction among land ownership, land use, the environment, and the family, focusing on the effect of this combination on the inheritance process, migration, work, and marriage.
