Abstract:

The history of the contact between Indians and missionaries involves debates on the use of music in evangelization and many musical practices in the villages of Portuguese America. Music, sometimes seen as a forceful strategy that resulted in the acculturation of theAmerindians, was, however, a significant vehicle of approach, dispute, negotiation and religious translation. This is the subject of this article, which is based on the analysis of Jesuit letters written in the early years of the Society of Jesus in Brazil.
