This paper aims to analyze principles of Portuguese language teaching presented in the set of curricular guidelines (also known as the PCN) and the Brazilian Committee of Didactic Books Assessment (PNLD-2011), these documents are used as references to evaluate the Portuguese didactic books. It was discussed the ways how the official voices, represented by the documents cited beforehand, legitimate the curriculum and approaches in the Portuguese language teaching. It was also discussed the concept of the didactic book and its role in the mother tongue teaching. The literature review shows that the didactic book, on the contrary of its position in 80s, is conceived as a material which can contribute to an effective teaching. The data analysis describes the pedagogical proposals of Portuguese didactic books which have been approved by PNLD-2011.
