%X En este trabajo se plantea que el Cerro de Potos¨ª se ocult¨® a los espa oles por ser el santuario m¨¢s importante de la regi¨®n, el cual estaba dedicado al dios Pachac¨¢mac. Los testimonios que indican que el cerro de Potos¨ª era "Apu" (Cerro o Se or) adorado son abundantes, pero es el cronista Arzans de Ors¨²a y Vela (a o 1736) quien dice que este "Apu" pertenec¨ªa a Pachac¨¢mac, dios del mundo subterr¨¢neo. Una tradici¨®n recogida cerca del salar de Uyuni dice lo mismo; finalmente un sacrificio realizado en el siglo XVI a orillas del lago Titicaca en honor a Pachac¨¢mac, muestra la presencia de este dios en el Collasuyo. Cuando los incas llegaron a Potos¨ª introdujeron el culto al Sol y cuando llegaron los espa oles identificaron el cerro con la Virgen Mar¨ªa la cual, a su vez, se identific¨® con la Pachamama o Madre Tierra. In this essay it is argued that "Cerro de Potosf' was hidden from the Spanish conquerors because it was the region's most important huaca or sanctuary, due to the fact that it was dedicated to the god Pachac¨¢mac. Abundant testimonies (colonial documents) indicate that "Cerro de Potosf was a worshipped "Apu" (Mountain, Se or or Lord), nevertheless chronicler Orzans de Ors¨²a y Vela (1736) stated that this "Apu" belonged to Pachac¨¢mac, god of the underworld. A tradition collected near the Salar de Uyuni states the same; finally, a sacrifice in honor of Pachac¨¢mac that occurred during the 16th century on the shores of Lake Titicaca, shows the presence of this god in the Collasuyo. When the Incas reached Potos¨ª, they introduced worship of the Sun, and when the Spanish conquerors arrived, they identified the "Cerro de Potosf with the Virgin Mary which at the same time was identified with Pachamama or Mother Earth.
